Swanmore
Report - 25th April 2004
Report by: Kay Turner
Portsmouth
Motocross Club held the fourth round of their Summer Championship Series and
also the final qualifying round for the BSMA Semi Finals, at the revised
Swanmore circuit. Although heavy
rain had fallen for days before the meeting, dust was inevitable but
thankfully it was kept to a minimum and only appeared to be a problem during
the adult races. Due to the popularity of the Club, double line-ups were
introduced for the Inter 85 and Senior classes, and these groups were to race
first.
First out were
the Small Wheel 85cc riders who quickly adapted to the slightly altered track,
but Sebastian Osbourne didn’t seem to notice that the circuit had been
changed to slow riders down, and sped his way to overall victory with three
domineering wins. With Osbourne
out of the way in one of the four races, Kristofer Ayres notched up a victory
in his second race, and finished off the day in second overall with two 2nd
places. Third overall and
continuing his good form comes Danny Urry, who was in close contention for a
top three position in his first race but had to settle for 4th, but
upped the anti in races two and three to finish 2nd and 3rd.
A welcome return by Lewis Trickett who finishes fourth overall,
completing a double whammy of 3rd places with a 5th in
race two. Yet another top 6
overall for Charlie Hughes who finishes fifth overall with a slightly
disappointing 6th in race one, but compensates for this by
finishing 4th in his second race and was just pipped at the post in
race three to finish 2nd. Closing the top 6 is Ashley Bailey who
after a disastrous first race finishing in 14th, manages to
complete his day by finishing an outstanding 3rd and 4th
in his final motos.
The Seniors
roared into action next with no real surprises of who was going to achieve
overall victory on the day. Richard
Leat is such an outstanding and talented rider, he takes a lot of beating, and
no one could manage this today. His
breathtaking riding skills kept the spectators gawping in awe.
Not to be outdone, Luke Blanchard rode equally as magnificently, not
daunted by his spectacular crash at the same track just two weeks previous.
In typical Blanchard style, Luke bounced back with a vengeance
finishing second overall, on the same points as third place Sean Barnsdale.
But his last race victory awarded Luke this higher position, with a 3rd
and 5th to add to his win. Sean Barnsdale, finally getting a ride
with Portsmouth, finished third overall with some ultra-talented riding
skills, awarding him with a 3rd, 4th and 2nd.
Having to put up with fourth overall but just glad to be in front of
his brother James, Nicky Watts put his unfamiliar 9th position
behind him to get back to his best by finishing 2nd in both
remaining motos. The alterations
to the track appeared to suit Lee Yates, improving on his last visits position
to finish fifth overall. Finishing
just one point behind Watts, Yates had an ever-improving day by starting off
with a 5th, stepping up a gear to finish 4th and then
ended the day in top gear by finishing 3rd.
Completing the top 6 comes Carl Chandler. A 6th in race two
interrupted Carl’s day of consistent 4th place positions in races
one and three.
The ever-popular
Autos stormed off the start gate with no real shock to see Fraser Viner
completing a hat trick of wins to finish overall victor.
His talent improves with every meeting but Michael Denton is improving
too, closing in on Viner with every race.
Three 2nd places were on the cards for Denton but Bethany
Farmer spoilt his fun in moto three by battling constantly with Michael,
leaving him having to settle for 3rd in the last race.
Luke Goddard, finally a Portsmouth member, finishes a respectable third
overall, improving his first race 5th to finish 4th in
his other two races. A disastrous
off in race three leaves Joe Jeffries in fourth overall. All set for a top
three position with his 4th and 3rd from his first two
races, a crash just after the lap scoring van saw Joe battling his way back
into 8th position, and finishes on the same points as fifth overall
rider Oliver Osmaston. Unfamiliar
territory for Oliver being outside the top 3, a second race 6th
position was to be his downfall, but added to the 3rd and 5th
positions, Oliver did just enough to stay inside the top six overall. Another outstanding performance by our only female Auto
rider, Bethany Farmer completes the top 6.
A slow start to the day, finishing in 9th, she improved in
the second moto to finish 5th, saving the best for last by
outracing Michael Denton to finish 2nd, to the sheer delight of the
crowd.
With the arrival
of Jake Shipton at the next meeting, it was the Juniors last chance to gain
victory, with Rob Muscat taking full advantage of the absence of last years
Junior Champion, finishing overall victor with two wins, but having to settle
for 2nd in race three behind Ryan Butler. Butler, always improving, finishes second overall, race one
spoiling his day by finishing in 7th, but got back to normal
business in race two to finish 3rd.
A breathtaking win in moto three makes up for Ryan’s first race
disappointment. As usual, Tom
Ellwood appears in the top 3, finishing on equal points with fourth overall,
but his 2nd place in race two clinched third overall for this
talented young rider. A 6th
and 5th in races one and three ensure Toms name appears in the top
6 again. Another top 6 regular,
Daniel Maxey finished in fourth spot overall, with consistent riding all day.
A 5th in race one saw Dan step up a notch to finish 4th
in the two remaining motos. A
return by Jake Carey saw him return to his usual status of appearing in the
top 6. A higher position would
have been the order of the day but a 9th in race two disrupted
Careys plans, but he should be happy with his first and last race performances
finishing in 4th and 3rd respectively.
Completing the top 6 comes Lloyd Pettett. Lloyds day started
brilliantly by coming in 2nd, but two remaining poor results meant
Pettett would finish in sixth overall, although a 6th and an 8th
would leave him just one point behind fifth overall.
With the sun beating down on the spectators, the action was about to hot up too as the mighty VMX boys deafened anyone in close proximity. With the majority of the adult riders on 250 four strokes, there was little chance of anyone ignoring this groups racing. Often considered “old codgers” and “passed it”, these young-at-heart Vets displayed some breathtaking riding skills, making their watching offspring proud. As witnessed on so many occasions, it was down to Chad Sait and Richard Paine to provide the entertainment at the front of the field, with Chad winning overall on the day with two magnificent wins, only being beaten by Richard in race one. Paine stuck to Sait like glue and followed him to finish 2nd in the final two motos to finis
