Report
Round 8 - Allington Lane
18th July 2004
Report by: Kay Turner
Allington Lane
welcomed Portsmouth Motocross Club for the 8th round of their Club
Championship a fortnight ago. Rain on Saturday night and Sunday morning made perfect track
conditions for 220 riders, all battling for those all important Championship
points.
The Inter Open
class waited impatiently for the 15 second board to spin to start proceedings,
and roared up the start straight with great haste.
A last minute change of venue for Sam Gabriel paid off as he sped into
the lead in races 2 and 3, battling as usual with Gennaro Dichello, and being
beaten only by Daniel Latham in race 1, to be overall victor.
A more successful day for Joshua Ash who managed to complete all three
races, improving with each race finishing 5th, 4th and
just behind Gabriel in race 3 to come in 2nd, finishing a brilliant
second overall. With his usual
determined streak shining through, Aaron Morgan deservedly finishes third
overall. Smooth riding helped
Morgan finish 4th and 5th in races 1 and 2, but an extra
gush of effort in the final moto showed how this likeable youngster can really
race, finishing in 3rd spot. Well
done Aaron, keep it up! Another
improved rider who finally shows his face in the top 6 is Craig Durston.
All year Craig has been moving closer to the top 6 and riding hard all
day ensured he finished a brilliant fourth overall, finishing 6th, 7th
and 5th. Only one point
behind comes Daniel Latham who started the day so well, beating the rest of the
field to finish 1st, and battled hard with his usual rivals of
Gabriel and Dichello to finish 3rd in race 2, but a disastrous crash
in race 3, leaving him crawling in at 22nd position ended Lathams day
on a low note, but still finished a credible fifth overall.
Closing the top 6 comes another fresh name, Matthew Cleaver-Rice.
Another rider to steadily improve all year, Matt rode consistently all
day finishing 7th, 8th and 7th.
Sounding like a
swarm of bees could only mean one thing, the Autos were raring to go.
The most consistent group of riders on the day, with the top five all
finishing in the same position in every race.
Without any need to announce who won overall, Fraser Viner completely
demolished the rest of the field, finishing 1st every race.
Second overall and finishing 2nd in every race goes to Michael
Denton, ever hopeful of a slip up by Viner to take top spot, but it wasn’t to
be. Brilliant Bethany came in third
all three races, skimming through the back markers with ease.
Farmer finishes third overall. Fourth
overall goes to Joshua Broadway who again rode consistently, tailing Bethany
every race to finish 4th in each.
Luke Goddard followed Broadway in races 1, 2 and 3 to finish 5th,
and fifth overall. Finally, sixth
overall goes to Harvey Clements. Breaking
the consistency run but only just, Clements finished 16th in race 1
but fought hard in races 2 and 3 to finish 6th in both motos.
Next to go were
the Inter 85s. Oliver Rusby secured three spectacular wins leading race 1
from start to finish, and ensured overall victory was his. In race 2 Danny Urry took the lead until Rusby took over on
lap 2 which he held to the flag with Charlie Hughes clicking at his heels.
Race 2 also witnessed some exciting battles in the top 6 between Hughes,
Robert Haig, Urry and Jackson Evans. The
last race was the most exciting with Evans taking an impressive holeshot to be
passed on the second lap by Hughes and Haig.
After a bad start, Rusby caught up to 2nd place behind Hughes
and then fell mid race. Rusby
resurfaced mid field and fought his way through, in spectacular style, to take
the lead from Hughes halfway through the last lap.
An outstanding achievement came from Robert Haig, who finished second
overall. Not only was this a brilliant racing achievement, it was also
a personal battle won too as it was only last year at the Allington Lane circuit
that Robert crashed dramatically, breaking both arms. Easing his way into the meeting to finish 5th, he
found the confidence to blast his way into 3rd in race 2, and saved
the best for the final race, to finish 2nd.
Brilliant! Jackson Evans,
always the showman, put in some spectacular performances at the front of the
field and was awarded third overall for his hard work.
Two 3rds and a 5th go to Jackson.
Fourth overall is awarded to Christopher Noyce, a brilliant achievement
in his first season in the Inter 85s. Races
1 and 2 saw Chris finish in 6th by an absolutely cracking 4th
in race 3 saw Noyce achieve another deserved high position.
It’s taken a while but worth the wait, Cameron Mills finishes in an
outstanding fifth position overall, in this very competitive class.
Two 9th positions only inspired Mills to battle his way
further up the field, and like a lad possessed, focused himself to finish a
brilliant 7th in the final race.
Sixth overall goes to George Gough who had an up and down sort of day,
finishing 12th in race 1, stepping up a gear to finish 7th
in race 2, but slipped back down to 9th in the final moto.
The always eager
Juniors were out next with Tom Ellwood leading the pack to finish overall victor
on the day. Three impressive wins secured Tom another group victory.
Continuing to dominate the field, Jake Carey finishes behind Ellwood in
second overall. 2nd, 3rd
and 4th were to be Careys race positions, battling constantly with
Ellwood, Maxey and Joshua Turner. Daniel
Maxey involved in this battle, finishes third overall with his usual stylish
racing, finishing 4th, 5th and a brilliant 2nd
in the final moto. Fourth overall
goes to newcomer Jamie Mole who had displayed some extraordinary talent on the
track, finishing 5th, 10th and a brilliant 3rd
at this meeting. Fifth overall goes
to Liam Garland who has started racing at his best, and once again appears in
the top 6. With 6th and
10th positions, joined by a brilliant 4th in race 2,
Garland will continue to improve and continue to show his face in the top
standings.
Un unusually large
but good to see group of VMX riders dominated the meeting, with a show of
amazing speed and agility for such an aged group of riders!!
Claiming to be too old but secretly sandbagging, visitor Stuart Hayward
providing some thrilling entertainment for the spectators, who were enjoying
some much awaited sunshine. Hayward
had a choice of competitors throughout the day, battling with the likes of
Lyons, Adlem and Paine but Chad Sait was to be his greatest rival. Dominating race 1, Hayward rode to victory, but after
overtaking a back marker in race 2, he fell off –
not part of the race plan, but still clawed his way back to 3rd,
just behind Sait. Race 3 saw one of
the most exciting races witnessed all season, with Sait leading the race all the
way until the last jump. Hayward
pipped him to the post, and passed the chequered flag about ½ millimetre in
front of Sait, to the thunderous cheers of the crowd.
Hayward is awarded overall victory with Sait in a close second overall,
with a 5th and two 2nds. Third
overall goes to Sait’s regular nemesis, Richard Paine.
Not appearing as a huge, yellow banana donning a change of gear, Paine
consistently rode well on his thumping four stroke, finishing 4th in
races 1 and 2, and 3rd in race 3, only managing to get one over Chad
this meeting in moto 1. Fourth
overall is awarded to the ever impressive Chris Adlem, displaying some more
added interest to the group, finishing 3rd, winning race 2, but the
third race proved his downfall. Fifth
overall goes to Martin “Mr Lace” Bradbury.
Another consistent days racing, maybe rather disappointing for the
‘young’ rider, but nevertheless some brilliant riding from this likeable
club member. Two 6ths and a brilliant 4th in the last race
proved Martins still got it in him to stay up there with the big boys.
A disappointing race 1 for Jason Skinner sees the extremely determined
rider only managing to finish sixth overall.
The 8th position added to his two 5ths in the remaining races
saw Jason finishing just two points behind 4th and 5th
overall.
A top class field
of AMX riders were next to grace the start straight.
Craig Daffin and Steve Turvey led the way but with DNFs and non
appearances, the two riders failed to appear in the overall top 6, and left the
outstanding Paul Watts to dominate all three races.
Watts picked off the rival threats one by one in spectacular fashion,
gliding past rivals as if they weren’t there.
Three easy wins gives Watts the victory overall.
Second overall goes to regular visitor Mike Shotter.
Steadily improving throughout the day, Shotters day started off with a 7th
but grasped 4th place in race 2 after passing James Blanchard.
Mike shot through the field in race 3 to finish up behind Watts in 2nd.
Third overall would have gone to Phil Lewis but an intimate moment with a
hedge in race 1 saw Lewis’ chance of a top placing scuppered, even though he
did manage to finish 3rd in the remaining two motos.
Instead Tom Bidder takes the honours, with some cool, calm and collected
riding. Now well into his first year of racing in the AMX, Bidder can hold his
own as well as any of the older AMX boys, and his 4th, 6th
and 5th positions stress this point well.
Testing a new bike and completely confusing the lapscorers with his
number, Ian Smith finishes a brilliant fourth overall.
The bike obviously suited Smith, and took him into 5th
position in race 1, 9th in race 2 and 6th in race 3.
Fifth overall goes to veteran visitor Warren Berthiaume. A name that has
been in motocross for years, Warren had a slow start finishing 12th,
but pulled himself back to 7th in race 2 and sped past the chequers
in 4th in the final moto. Finally
Dan Umlandt closes the top 6, racing at a steady pace all day coming in 6th,
8th and 7th.
Last but by no means least, the mighty Seniors roared into action. Congratulations go to Luke Blanchard who once again managed to stay on his bike for all three races, this achievement being rewarded with first overall. Two spectacular and breathtaking wins, plus a 3rd gave Luke enough points to beat his rivals. He didn’t bank on Carl Chandler finishing so close behind, but his two wins gave him the edge. Chandler rode impressively well to finish second overall, with two 2nds and a brilliant win in race 2. Some spectacular racing by the top two was spiced up even more with Allen Waring joining in the fun, finishing in both races 1 and 3 behind the front runners. Waring grasped his chance of victory in race 2 but narrowly missed the win by a whisker and had to settle for 2nd, giving Allen third overall. Returning after a recent injury, Sean Barnsdale sneaks into fourth overall, obviously not wanting to let the injury slow him down, and finished in 4th, 6th and 5th. A welcome return to Nick Watts who after having both arms in plaster for two months, finally made it back to the race track. Itching to get back to his winning ways, Watts took it easy for his first meeting back, letting his rivals taste victory. Two 5ths and a 6th are not bad for a comeback, but 1st place is beckoning this talented young rider, and will be awarded to him sooner rather than later. To close the show, James Watts slots in just behind his brother to finish in sixth overall. Finishing 8th and 9th only inspired Jamie to crank open the throttle and blast his way into 4th place in race 2.
