– 2 Day Trophy Meeting
Report
by Kay Turner
Portsmouth Motocross Clubs recent two-day meeting certainly went with a bang thanks to the torrential thunderstorm providing an extra piece of action during day one. Rain stopped play after block one as the track turned into a swimming pool, with thunder and lightning threatening a complete washout. But the Club was determined to continue and with the sun finally shining, another block was completed. Day two saw the racing resume for the 10th round of the Clubs Summer Championship.
The AMX class saw a new name added to the winners podium. Bad luck throughout the weekend didn’t deter Ian Tallack from taking the overall trophy, narrowly missing out on a win on day one, but continued to ride solidly to give him the narrowest of leads over second placed Carl “Crasher” Chandler. Returning after injury and “retirement”, Chandler stayed hot on Tallack’s heels, and winning the second race helped his chances of snatching first. Again dominating the group, Luke Blanchard missed race two and saw his chances of winning overall float down the track in the rain. But wins across the board in his remaining races left him in third overall. Praise must go to the talented youngster after crashing on corner one left him in last, he battled hard to pass Sean Barnsdale six laps later to take the win. Pure class. Chomping at the bit, Callum Leitch was gagging to race in the rain, but had to wait for the wet stuff to stop before racing into fourth overall position, scoring great fourth and fifth places on Saturday. Unable to secure his posterior on his machine, George Clarke still managed to finish in fifth overall, a brilliant third on Sunday totting up high points to aide his cause. Managing to drag his leg over his bike was achievement enough, but Ricky Downes finished in a brilliant sixth overall, content with his goody bag and the sixth place trophy made his weekend even better!
Exciting action came from the Veteran class which was led by Richard Paine, taking the majority of wins in his stride. Paine claimed the overall victory and the biggest trophy, with Shaun Brooker finishing in second overall. Brooker snatched the final moto win for himself to stay enough points ahead of third placed Chad Sait. The multi-winning Club Champion pushed his bike to the limit to carve through the field to keep up with the front runners. A comparative newcomer to the sport, Shaun Skeates showed impressive bike-handling ability to finish in fourth overall. Neil Jenkinson waited patiently for his bike to return from the AMX race to take fifth overall, with battling hard all weekend with sixth overall rider Jamie Winbourne. Winbourne chopped and changed positions with Jenkinson throughout the meeting, but just did enough to keep Matt Denton out of the top six.
Nothing will stop the youngster now, for Mitchell Bligh achieved his first race win and brilliantly took the first placed trophy in the Inter Open class. Keeping Oliver Rusby constantly in his sights, Bligh enjoyed the feeling so much, he took another win on day one to the delight of family and friends. A gallant effort by James Phillips, an up and coming rider, to take second overall. Brilliant racing all weekend left Phillips ahead of third placed rider George Streak. Hard, determined riding saw Streak improving his race positions throughout the weekend and his hard work paid off, the third podium position his reward. Taking control of the proceedings on Sunday, Oliver Rusby’s three wins left him in fourth overall, ahead of Kurt Bond. Bond took fifth overall, a disastrous 14th in race three leaving him too many points behind to move into fourth. An impressive ride came from Ryan Carter who sneaked into sixth overall, constant encouragement from family pushing him further up the field throughout the weekend.
Inter 85 rider Lloyd Pettett appeared unbeatable all weekend. Five wins were easy picking for the youngster and he took the victory with pride. Oliver Paine battled hard throughout the weekend, determined to take a win. Two second positions awarded him the second placed trophy with Lewis Moyle presented with trophy number three. Moyle rode brilliantly all weekend, equalling Jack Scarletts points tally, but a third in the final moto left him holding the bigger trophy. Two brilliant fourth positions should have secured third overall for Jack Scarlett, but being pipped at the post in the final race left him unfortunately just outside the top three, and fourth overall was awarded. Speeding past both Moyle and Scarlett, James Rennie’s second place in the final moto secured him the fifth overall trophy. James Windsor still managed to take sixth overall following his crash, but a brilliant third in race one secured vital points.
Junior rider Billy Hare was assured the overall victory, but a snapped chain in race one allowed Max Acres to reign supreme as Junior champ. Acres continually closed Hare down finishing second in all but one race, winning the opening race on Saturday. Oliver McMurray followed the top two as close as he could, and was awarded second overall for all his hard work. A great effort by Michael Denton who kept the leaders in sight, and top three positions aided his cause to take third overall. Billy Hare went on to tuck the remaining victories under his crash helmet, the curse of his mothers tongue nearly spoiling the good run. A tumble just after the lapscoring van left Acres closing in, but his determination kept him in the lead, and was eventually awarded fourth overall. Even with a fall before the second corner leaving her in the unlucky 13th place, Billie Dunlop’s other races notched up enough points to leave her in fifth overall, a fifth her best result over the weekend. Battling constantly with brother Kieran throughout the meeting, Kyle Stevens got the upper hand, and rode consistently enough to take sixth overall.
Determined to take home the big one, Auto rider Joshua Coleman rode at his usual standard and breezed through the weekend, taking all wins, even with an off thrown in for good measure. Coleman took the overall victory. A determined and brilliant effort by Ollie Evans saw him proudly lift the second place trophy, keeping third overall rider Jamie Cox at bay for most of the weekend. An equally impressive ride from Cox saw him battling hard with Evans over both days, adding two second places to his impressive points tally. Determined to the bitter end, Hamish Stewart-Ross took fourth overall, forgetting a bit of a disastrous day on Saturday, Hamish set his mind on top spot, and brilliantly achieved a third in race two, day two. Keeping Stewart-Ross in his sights, Taylor Smith battled hard, and stayed in contention, but a tenth in the final moto left him just a few points short of taking a higher position, but was still awarded a great fifth overall. An outstanding sixth overall for Thomas Gathercole who rode at his best all weekend, and was truly rewarded for his grit and determination through the mud, achieving a brilliant fourth in the first race whilst battling with the rain.
The Senior class had the misfortune of racing their first moto in the torrential downpour, although the bikes came back squeaky clean, albeit a tad soggy! Jamie Tempest kept his nerve in the treacherous conditions and even with a 16th position on day two, the first placed trophy was awarded. With the bike in pieces the night before, it was a miracle he rode at all, but Thomas Speer ignored his Meccanno machine dilemma and kept his name in the top flight all weekend. A brilliant second overall was awarded to Speer ahead of Allen Waring. An unlucky 13th in the mud left Waring in third overall, but with two seconds and two thirds, a higher position could have been his. Improving impressively throughout the weekend, Michael Kimber took fourth overall, saving his best result for the last race of the day, finishing the chequered flag in fifth. Unable to repeat his brilliant seventh and fifth places from day one, Chris Bick still managed to keep up with the pace at the front of the pack, and took fifth overall, ahead of Ross Lopez in sixth. Unperturbed by the rain and muddy conditions on Saturday, Lopez scored his highest points once the rain died down and finished in seventh in race two.
