Matchams – 14th May 2006

What a scorcher

Report by Kay Turner

Portsmouth Motocross Club could finally class their recent meeting at Matchams round six of their Summer Club Championship as the circuit was emblazoned with sun and the heat was felt both on and off the track.

As expected, Jake Shipton took the overall victory with sizzling speed in the Inter 85 class and took three wins with style.  Visiting Sonny Oliver took second overall keeping third overall Chris Chapman at bay, Oliver’s second in race one giving him the upper hand.  Chapman had the last laugh finishing second in the remaining motos.  Gordon Appleton remained on good form to finish in fourth ahead of Lloyd Pettett who finished in fifth overall, a fourth in race one his best result of the day.  Aaron Withers rode consistently to finish in sixth overall with thee sixth places.

With three different riders winning throughout the day, it was anyone’s race in the Junior class, but Billy Hare kept his cool to take the overall win adding two second places to his win.  Ryan Fellowes won the final moto and took second overall away from Daniel Clark who started the day off with a win, and ended in third overall with two third places.  Liam Knight finished in fourth in all three races to take fourth overall, ahead of Steven Robinson and Harry Penney who battled with each other throughout all the motos to finish fifth and sixth respectively.

Missing out the back part of the lengthy track, the Auto riders were once again led around by Joshua Coleman who took all three wins and overall victory.  A slight hitch in race one didn’t deter Freddie Lambeth from focusing on top spot and with two second places, he finished in second overall.  Battling hard as usual, Oliver Evans fought his way through the sand to take third overall, finishing second in race one to aid his cause.  Jamie Cox stayed in touch with the front runners to finish in fourth overall, with Taylor Smith and David Keet battling to take the final two spaces, Smith edging ahead with two fifth places.

One of the largest groups on the day provided some of the most exciting action.  The Senior class was completely dominated by the Matchams King, Kristian Whatley.  Making it look so easy, Whatley took all three wins and was crowned overall victor.  Visitors Ross Hill and James Cottrell fought hard for the runner up spot with Hill just taking the honours with Cottrell taking third spot with a fourth, third and second.  Another visiting rider Tom Watts took fourth overall ahead of Daniel Latham and Luke Priddle who tied on points for fifth and sixth overall.  Latham took the higher position thanks to his fourth in the final race.

AMX action was thick and fast, with different riders leading throughout all three motos.  John Ford took control and with a win in race three took the victory over Sean Barnsdale who handed the lead to Ford in the final race.  Both riders ended up on the same points but Ford last race win left Barnsdale in second overall.  Brett Wheeler won race one to take third overall.  A welcome return to Richard Leat who wowed the crowds with his table-top antics but a seventh in race one left him further down the table than expected, but still finished a respectable fourth overall.  Tom Moore and Ian Tallack closed the top six, Moore’s third in race two helping him finish in fifth overall, with Tallack saving a tumble until the last lap in the final race to finish in sixth overall.

The Veterans class was again a two-way battle between Steve Lyons and Richard Paine, again Lyons taking the victory with two wins over Paine’s one victory.  Shaun Brooker stayed consistent through the day passing the chequers in third in all three motos to take third overall.  Martin Bradbury finished in fourth overall, staying in contention with two fourth places aiding his cause, with Shaun Skeates close behind to finish in fifth overall.  Paul Brackenbury rode a steady race to finish eighth in all three motos, giving those essential points to finish in sixth overall.

A full line up of Inter Open riders was an awesome sight on the start straight, Scott Elderfield making the victory his with three straight wins.  Lewis Trickett stayed in contention with two seconds securing him second overall.  Pompey favourite Lewis Abbott returned to his old Club to take third overall, steadily climbing the table throughout the day, finishing in fourth, third and second.  Hot on the pace as ever, Jackson Evans rode into fourth overall with a fifth, fourth and sixth.  Oliver Rusby and Jake Hassell battled it out to finish in fifth and sixth respectively, Rusby taking the higher place thanks to a fifth in race two.
