Matchams –  2nd July 2006

Report by Kay Turner

Unbearable temperatures didn’t make life easy for the 140 riders who recently attended Portsmouth Motocross Clubs eighth round of their Summer Championship.  A last minute change of venue saw the riders travel to Matchams, but the track held up well and the dust tried to stay away.

The Auto class led the way with Joshua Coleman heading the pack once again, with Oliver Evans and Jamie Cox battling it out for the runners up spot.  Evans took second with Cox finishing in third, Evans being pipped at the finish line by Cox in the last race.  Three consistent fourth positions inevitably left Freddie Lambeth in fourth overall, with Matthew Dowse chasing hard to finish in fifth.  A brilliant performance by Jorja Johnson rewarded her with sixth overall, being placed seventh, sixth and sixth.

The Seniors kicked up the most dust, but provided some entertaining racing, with three different race winners.  Visiting Sam Gabriel haunted his old rivals by taking the first win, but it was to be Daniel Latham who took the overall victory by taking the final race win.  Harvey MacDonald sneaked in front of Gabriel to take second overall, claiming race two’s win.  Sam composed himself to take second in race three to take third overall.  Downgrading to a 125cc didn’t deter Thomas Speer to ride at his spectacular standard, and he carved through the field to take fourth overall, with two thirds and a fourth.  Bike problems left Allen Waring in an unfortunate fifth overall position, although a fourth in race two rewarded his efforts.  Younger brother Dudley MacDonald kept his cool, and after a ninth in race one, kept up with the fast pace at the front of the field, finishing in fifth and sixth to take sixth overall.

Showing the heat was only a mild irritant, the AMX boys rode their kit off, Luke Blanchard taking the overall win with two brilliant wins, only being beaten into second by Brett Wheeler in the final race.  Wheeler took second overall, mechanical gremlins pushing him down the field in race one, but still gained enough points to hold off Shane Carless who took third overall.  A great start after finishing in third, Steve Turvey truly deserved a higher position, but a sixth and seventh left him in fourth overall just ahead of Ian Tallack.  Two fifth places ensured Tallack fifth overall, but an eleventh in race three thanks to the chestnut fencing meant a disappointing end to his day.  Following Tallack throughout the day, Stuart Seymour finished in sixth overall, a sixth awarded in race one his best result of the day.

Even on borrowed machinery, VMX rider Richard Paine still took the overall victory with three straight convincing wins.  Chad Sait took advantage of Alan Scott’s crash in race two to slide into second overall, with Shaun Brooker tying on points with Scott but with another consistent set of results, a brilliant second in the final moto left Brooker in third.  Alan Scott chased Paine all the way to the chequered flag in race one, Martin Bradbury’s early and unexpected departure ensuring second place was his.  But the crash in race two left him in fifth, ending the day in fourth overall.  Battling hard with the front runners, Paul Williams third overall was guaranteed with two third positions but a fifth in race three left him lower down than he should have been, but in front of Ian Birkett who pushed his machine to the limit to finish in sixth overall.

There was no disputing the winner of the Inter Open class.  Lewis Trickett made it look so easy taking all three wins with pure style and showmanship.  Jake Hassell was close behind, taking second overall with three impressive second places, with Oliver Rusby closing him down in every race finishing third overall.  Fourth, fifth and sixth overall were tightly contested by Ashley Bailey, Jake Carey and Jacob Myers respectively, Bailey taking the higher position thanks to two fifth places and a last race fourth.

The Inter 85 class was a three-way race with Lloyd Pettett coming out on top with two wins.  Daniel Maxey had a taste of victory in race two to equal Pettett’s points tally, but settled for second overall.  Battling hard with the top two, Oliver Paine took third overall sandwiching himself between Maxey and Pettett in race two to race past the chequered flag in second, his best position of the day.  An unfortunate accident left Gordon Appleton in agony but he fought through the pain barrier to finish all three motos in fourth and fourth overall was his.  Luck isn’t a word associated with Aaron Withers recently, but the two fifths gained in the first two motos warranted a change in luck, until mechanical gremlins proved us wrong!  A gallant seventh in race three left Withers in fifth overall, followed by David Roberts in sixth.  A great ride by Roberts throughout the day, a sixth in the final moto being his best result.

Melting on the line to race last, the Junior class was dominated by Fraser Viner who snatched all three wins away from the rest of the pack.  Max Acres snuck ahead of Billy Hare in race one to finish in second but Hare took the remaining second places and the second overall placing, a fine performance after returning from injury.  Acres rode solidly and fought hard to stay in contention and was awarded third overall.  Another great day on the track for Oliver McMurray who rode consistently to finish in fourth, and took fourth overall.  Steve Robinson chased hard to finish in fifth overall, with Michael Denton riding consistently well to finish in sixth overall, three sixth positions his reward.
