Report by Kay Turner

With the sun shining, not a rain cloud in sight, and with 190 riders revving on the start line, the combination equalled a perfect race meeting for Portsmouth Motocross Club.  The sixth round of their Summer series was held recently at the Foxholes circuit in Salisbury.  Unfortunately the dust reared its ugly head and made racing difficult at times.

Kicking up the dust from race one, the AMX stormed up the start straight, with three different riders taking the three wins. Jamie Webb took the honours in the opening race but bike problems left him off the leader board.  Harvey MacDonald took over at the front in race two and took the overall win after a long, hard battle to keep second overall rider Chris Southcott off top spot.  A disastrous couple of races saw Luke Blanchard having to battle his way through the field to achieve a top ten result, but race three saw him back to normal, leading from the start which ensured him the final race win and a gallant third overall.  Back to form, Ian Tallack lead the opening race and kept close to the front to finish in third, and with two sixth positions in the remaining races, he claimed fourth overall ahead of visitor Jamie Hallett.  Hallett closed in on the front runners in race two to finish in fourth and ended the day in fifth overall.  Lee Wharton’s opening race secured him enough points to finish in the top sixth, a fourth place in race one securing him sixth overall.

The fast action continued in the VMX class.  After winning race one, Martin Bradbury’s bike problems allowed Chad Sait back into top spot, taking the overall victory with two wins and a second.  Alan Scott gradually moved further up the points table, battling constantly with Dave Lopez for second overall, but with Lopez’s unfortunate eighth in race two, Scott took the position, finishing in fourth, third and second.  Lopez’s two third places and brilliant starts ensured him third overall.  Fourth overall went to Andy Griggs who took no prisoners on the track, ensuring the lines he wanted remained his, and progressed up the points table through the day, a fourth in race three his best result.  Who needs a 250F when you can gain impressive places on a 125cc like Jamie “Wurzel” Winbourne?  Holding his ground in race two in third position until Alan Scott finally sneaked passed, a fourth and two sixth places awarded Winbourne fifth overall.  Gary Steel continued to keep the front runners in his sights, and with a fifth in race one adding extra points to his tally, sixth overall was awarded.

With the start gate at near-full capacity, the Senior class provided non-stop entertainment, with Jamie Tempest and Thomas Speer going head-to-head to take the win.  Back markers played their part, and with both riders taking a win each it was down to the last race, with Tempest grabbing the victory and the overall.  Speer rode his KTM hard to finish in second overall.  An exciting fight for third overall between Dudley MacDonald and Harry Seymour, but a change of machinery for Seymour in race two left him out of the running and MacDonald’s two impressive third places and a fourth awarded him third overall.  No good-luck kisses required this meeting for Josh “slim” Scott as consistent impressive starts provided him with a head-start in front of his rivals.  A fifth, fourth and seventh was enough to give him fourth overall.  A nasty crash on the second corner and twisted handlebars didn’t deter Oliver Rusby to chase the front runners down, and a brilliant effort in race three to finish in fifth rewarded him with fifth overall ahead of Harry Seymour.  Problems with a sprocket left Seymour with no choice but to use a borrowed bike in race two, but with a high scoring fourth and third in his other two races, sixth overall was truly deserved.

The Inter Open riders just managed to all squeeze around the first corner, with Jackson Evans leading from the off in the first two races, and continued to lead the field with ease to take all three wins and the overall victory.  Gareth Padgett spoiled Evans consistency and took the lead in the final moto, but had to settle for second in all races to finish second overall.  A brilliant comeback for Jake Carey who battled constantly with Mitchell Bligh but kept him on his back wheel to finish third in all motos and third overall.  Consistent riding from the top five riders saw Mitchell Bligh battling hard with Carey, chopping and changing positions on every lap.  Finishing fourth in all three races left him in fourth overall ahead of Cameron Mills who battled hard to pass the scrap between Bligh and Carey, but settled for three positions and fifth overall.  After sniffing around the top six for so long, David Bowen finally left the mechanical gremlins in the garage and with a sixth in race two his best position on the day, sixth overall was awarded, a great result for an up-and-coming rider.

Inter 85 rider James Dunn wowed the crowds with his talent to take all three wins in his class and the overall victory.  A battle was on for second but with all three contenders meeting with disaster, it left to Michael Denton to take over the position, a fourth in the final race adding vital points to ensure a well-deserved second overall was his.  A brilliant ride by Kayleigh Durston who finished third overall, battling hard from start to finish, saving the best for last to finish in third in the final moto.  A rider who continues to improve at every meeting, James Rennie battled his way to the front and kept his rivals staring at his back wheel.  Fourth overall on the day was awarded to Rennie ahead of David Roberts.  A slow start to the day for Roberts but he pushed himself to the limit in the remaining motos and a brilliant fourth and fifth rewarded him with fifth overall.  Continuing to stay at the front of the pack, Kieran Gabriele had another impressive day on the track, a sixth in race two helping him close in on the leaders to finish sixth overall.

Non-stop action in the Junior class, with regular winner Joshua Coleman taking top honours once again.  Coleman rode the perfect race to take all three wins and the overall victory.  A mighty scrap pursued between Jordan Bachelor, Harry Sherman and Harvey Clements with Bachelor having the upper hand to finish in second overall thanks to his two second places.  Sherman improved progressively through the day, and with impressive starts and huge support from the spectators, he finished in third overall, a fourth, third and second his final standings.  Harvey Clements didn’t lose sight of the top three, and continuing to ride consistently and with a brilliant third in the first race, Clements was awarded fourth overall.  Another great set of races by Bethany Farmer who pushed hard and finished in fifth overall with two fifths and a fourth.  Taylor Smith moved further up the field staying in touch with Farmer to finish in sixth in the first two races, and ended the day in sixth overall.

Tackling the whole track, the Auto riders took it all in their stride and fought hard to find the smallest ruts to ride through.  Josh Bunters great performance awarded him two wins, and the overall victory on the day.  David Keet took the first race win, and kept Bunter in his sights for the remaining motos and took second overall.  Much to the delight of his supporters, third overall Harry Wichman chased the leaders in the opening races, but race three found the leaders chasing him.  A brilliant start left him at the front of the field, but settled for second as he passed the chequered flag.  A determined effort from Aaron Gordon who kept a good distance ahead of his rivals, finishing in fourth in the opening motos to end the day in fourth overall.  A welcome return to Camlann MacDonald who even after injury leapt straight into the top six with a gallant effort on the track.  Improving his positions throughout the day, a fourth in the final moto his best result awarded him fifth overall.  A brilliant and hard-fought set of races from Charlie Way who edges further and further up the points table with every meeting, and a fifth in race one rewarded the youngster with sixth overall.
