Report by Kay Turner

Triumphant Tallack

Portsmouth Motocross Club recently held the eleventh round of their Summer Series at the popular Foxholes circuit near Salisbury.  Following on from some top action at the Girls National the previous day, the boys took over the circuit, with a few girl competitors opting to race the whole weekend.

First out of the gate were the AMX, non-stop thrills from start to finish flag.  With several different leaders keeping the lapscorers on their toes, the overall win went to Ian Tallack.  Desperate to return to the track after a recent injury, Tallack won the opening motos, race two a show of impressive, smooth riding, taking the lead from lap two and maintained a good lead for the rest of the race, euphorically passing the chequers to win.  Harvey MacDonald’s unfortunate spill in race one denied him top spot, but still achieved second overall, persevering in all motos to snatch a win away from Tallack which he managed in race three.  Leading the way in race one, Tom Moore continued to race well and fought hard to stay at the front of the pack, a third fourth and sixth leaving him in third overall.

Lee Wharton battled hard at the front of the field, narrowly missing the chance to grab the first race win to finish in second.  A fourth in race two left him heading for a top three position, but unable to start his bike in the final race left him struggling to get back to the front of the field and ended the day in fourth overall.  Fifth overall Shaun Kerley had reverse fortune to Wharton, a brilliant start to race one but disappearing halfway through left him struggling in 11th position.  He redeemed himself in the remaining motos, finishing fifth and then battled hard for the win to finish in second in race three.  A brilliant start for Aaron Lovelock in race two rewarded him with third place, and equally impressive rides in one and three awarded him sixth overall.

A couple of nasty accidents in the VMX class reduced the field slightly. Steve Lyons dominated the group winning all three motos with a huge lead over the rest of the pack.  Chad Sait rode a consistent set of races, chasing Lyons in each moto and finished runner up in second overall.  Several riders fought for third overall, but it was to be Neil Jenkinson who beat the rest to take the position, fifth, third and fourth positions on the day.

There was no sign of both wrists being recently broken for Alan Scott, his riding impressive as ever, carving his way through the field with ease and battling to get a top spot.  With a sixth, fourth and third positions, fourth overall was awarded on the day.  George McGarvie rode consistently to finish in the top ten in two races, a third in race one his best result of the day, to finish in fifth overall.  A great effort by Andy Griggs, with great starts aiding his cause.  The flash of red gear continued to work through the front of the pack and finishing in fourth, fifth and ninth rewarded him with sixth overall.

A feisty bunch of Senior riders followed, with breathtaking battles going on around the whole track.  Chasing the front two in race one left Dudley MacDonald in third, but brilliant riding in the remaining motos pushed him into first place to take the overall win.  Nail biting action came courtesy of Craig Durston and Harry Seymour, battling neck-and-neck in race one but with a final burst and flying leap at the finish line, Durston grabbed the win and edged ahead to take second overall.  Taking the lead in all motos left Seymour high up the field, and with a second, third and fourth, third overall was awarded.

Fourth overall was awarded to visiting rider Lori Howe, who passed the line in sixth, fifth and fifth.  A battle pursued between Aaron Pearce and James Benson, chopping and changing positions through all three motos with both riders finishing on equal points.  Pearce grabbed fifth overall thanks to his fourth in the opening moto, but succumbed to Benson pressure in the remaining motos to finish just behind, crossing the finish line in seventh.  Bensons brilliant starts were impressive and showed the rider’s injury troubles were hopefully far behind him.  A great result of fifth, sixth and sixth rewarded him with sixth overall.

A huge turnout of Inter Open riders roared up the start, kicking up dust.  When the dust settled Jackson Evans was long gone.  But bike problems in races two and three relegated him to second place but still took the overall win.  Unable to avoid a pile up on the first corner left Gareth Padgett having to work his way through the entire field in race one, but smooth passing in the remaining motos slotted him perfectly into the lead to win both races, and placed him in second overall.  Scrapping hard behind the leaders, Kurt Bond’s consistency paid off to leave him in third overall, a fourth and two thirds his placings.

Another outstanding performance from Jordan Moyle who battled all day with Bond, snatching away his glory in the first race to finish in a brilliant third.  Chasing him to the line in the remaining races, Moyle finished in fourth in both to end the day in fourth overall.  After her outstanding fourth overall in the Girls National the previous day, Hannah McLeod showed the boys how it’s done, finishing in second in the first moto opening a putting the wind up a number of males!  Two fifth places were added to her total to award her fifth overall.  The most impressive ride of all came from Jack Scarlett, who bravely rode all three races with not just one, but possibly two broken feet!  He steered his Yamaha around the track with perfect precision, keeping even higher positions well within his sight, but saving top spot for later when he is fully fit, and passed the chequered flag in fifth,  sixth and sixth.  Sixth overall was a truly well-deserved position.

The Inter 85 class was dominated by Billy Hare.  Making winning look so easy, Hare made no mistakes and rode a sensible but extremely quick race, nearly half a lap ahead of his rivals to take the overall win.  An exciting battle took place behind the leader between Darren Wingar, David Roberts, Kayleigh Durston and Billie Dunlop, both girl riders still relishing on their success the previous day.  Wingar succeeded in taking second overall away from the pack, a third, fourth and second his results. Following her outstanding second overall at the Girls National the day before, Kayleigh Durston found extra energy from within to stay at the top for a second day, and rode a gallant set of races to finish in third overall.

Second overall was on the cards for David Roberts after two second places in the opening motos, battling his boots off to pass the front riders, but on the second lap in the last disaster struck which dropped him to mid pack.  A determined ride pushed him back up to ninth to award him fourth overall.  Another top runner at the Girls on Saturday finishing in third, Billie Dunlop rode through the exhaustion barrier to keep ahead of her male counterparts, two fifths were awarded for her effort in the opening motos.  But saving the best for last she picked off her rivals one-by-one to finish in third, and finished fifth overall on the day.  Jake Fry stayed in contention with the front runners, a constant battle in all three motos between himself and those in front and behind challenging for the lead.  Two sixths and a fifth his results on the day, to finish in sixth overall.

Dean McLeod left the remaining Junior riders in a cloud of dust, with an enormous lead ahead of the rest of the pack, taking all three wins to finish overall victor. A concerted effort by Harvey Clements left him undoubtedly in the top three, and with two second positions and a third, he was awarded a clear second overall.  With the unfortunate Bethany Farmer suffering an horrendous crash in the final moto to leave her out of the running, a brilliant effort by Matthew Dowse saw him push his way further up the field throughout the day, finally settling in third spot to take third overall.

Tom Gathercole continued to look impressive on the track, and determined efforts in all three races pushed him further up the field during the day.  A brilliant fourth in the last combined with his seventh and sixth awarded him with fourth overall.  Fifth overall was awarded to Sam Baggott who remained in the top ten throughout the day, two fifth places in the remaining motos his reward for his consistent and hard-fought rides.  Continuing to push his way to the front of the pack, Oliver Evans stayed in contention for even higher positions in the future.  Fifth, eighth and sixth places rewarded him with sixth overall.

The Auto riders were the last to buzz around the circuit, with David Keet taking the lead in the opening motos and a second in race three left him overall winner.  Joshua Bunter stayed right on Keet’s back mudguard to take second overall, an unfortunate spill on the last corner in race two relinquishing his chance to take top spot, but a win in race three kept him high up the points table.  Camlann MacDonald tried everything possible to sneak in front of the leaders, but a consistent set of results, finishing in third in each race deservedly awarded him third overall.

Battling strong and so close to a win, Tommy Hutchison stayed on the pace in the class.  He sniffed at the door of victory in the second moto to finish in second, and added to his fifth and fourth places he finished in fourth overall.  Harry Wichman rode a steady set of races, chopping and changing positions with Hutchison, and finished in fourth, fifth and fifth to take home fifth overall.  Improving week-by-week, Olivier Cook fought hard in every race to keep Palmer Brooks on his tail, and battling through back markers, he kept his cool and finished in sixth in all three races, finishing sixth overall.
