Swanmore Report

by Kay Turner

Another great turnout for the second round of Portsmouth Motocross Clubs Summer Series, with 213 riders arriving at the Swanmore circuit to face a loose and dusty track with a cold wind not raising temperatures.

A full line up of Inter Open riders tried to catch Jake Shipton but only Gareth Padgett was able to beat the talented lad from Wareham and did so in the first race, doing a great job of leading from start to finish. Shipton took over the lead and the wins in the remaining motos and took the overall victory.  Padgett maintained his healthy lead ahead of his rivals and added two seconds to his race win to finish in second overall.  A return of Cameron Mills’s top form awarded him three impressive third places which left him in third overall.  Mitchell Bligh saved the best for last and closed in on the front runners to snatch fourth in the final moto to earn himself fourth overall.  Battling to keep his rivals behind him, Chris Noyce steamed into fifth overall, a fourth in race two pushing him further up the points table.  Tom Lilly took the final top six position, a seventh in the final moto his best result on the day.

Determined to make this years Seniors title his, Sebastian Osborne yet again took top honours with two wins in the last two motos, but Jamie Tempest spoiled his run of victories by taking the win in race one to finish in second overall. Tom Speer bashed bars with his rivals on the last corner to snatch third overall, determined to grab a win and finished close in race two to finish second.  A good start to the day for Charlie Hughes who swept passed his rivals to finish in second, and earned enough points during the rest of the meeting to keep himself in fourth overall.  Riding a steady but determined race throughout the day, Scott Elderfield started his campaign to return to the top and finished in fifth overall.  A slow start only inspired Dale Lyons to push himself to the limit and a fifth in the final moto earned him a commendable sixth overall.

Dominating the Inter 85 class yet again, Rob Muscat didn’t have it all his own in the final moto and found Lloyd Pettett steaming ahead of him, but stepping up a gear he passed him mid race to take all three wins and overall victory.  Pettett rode a perfect race all day and finished in second overall with three second positions.  Holeshotting race three proved Billy Hare meant business and with two third places in the opening moto left him in a commendable third overall.  Tying on points with Hare, Oliver Paine had to settle for fourth overall, saving his best result until race three finishing in third position.  Two consistent fourth placings left Ryan Fellowes challenging for a higher position but settled in fifth overall ahead of Darren Wingar.  Determined to fight his way to the top, Wingar pushed himself higher up the field throughout the day, to finish in sixth overall.

A close battle emerged at the front of the pack between Junior riders Liam Knight and Oliver Osmaston but Osmaston’s misfortune throughout the day saw Knight take two wins to give him the overall.  Josh Coleman slotted neatly into second overall with two second places with Jordan Bachelor battling hard to keep himself in third overall.  A great start to the day for Levi Coombes by finishing in third, and continued to head to the front of the field, finishing only a few points behind Bachelor in fourth overall.  Continuing his good run of points scoring, Tallon Aspden once again finished in the top six, fifth overall his reward for an outstanding and ever-improving performance.  Visitor Callum Heasman’s second race result let him down but still managed to score enough points to keep him in sixth overall.

Three different race winners proved an exciting show in the Auto class, but it was Jamie Cox who took the overall after winning race two.  A second win was in the bag for Cox but an accident saw the final moto red-flagged and the re-run saw Hamish Stewart-Ross take over the lead, the extra points rewarding him with second overall.  A bad start for David Keet didn’t stop the youngsters determination to fight for top spot and a second and third in the last two races left him in third overall.  Another fine performance by Tom Hutchison saw him once again appear in the top six, a brilliant second in race one proving he will be one to watch this season.  Appearing from nowhere and another rider to keep an eye on, Harry Wichman’s steady set of results throughout the day left him in fifth overall, a fourth in race three his best result.  Camlann MacDonald remained consistent and continued his campaign to put himself on the champions podium, finishing in sixth overall for the second meeting running.

The AMX class roared up the start straight to provide a thrilling set of races, with Harvey MacDonald pinching the overall victory with a win just evading him in the final race.  Ian Tallack rode a steady and determined race throughout the day finishing in third in all three motos, and was awarded second overall.  Nothing seemed to be able to stop Luke Blanchard again this round, and two wins in the opening motos saw him sitting in top spot, but a lost fuel cap in race three saw him lose valuable time but grabbed enough points to finish third overall.  Battling hard to chase Blanchard down, Allen Waring finished in second in the first race to improve his points tally tremendously, and a fifth and fourth in the remaining motos left him in fourth overall.  Taking full advantage of Blanchard’s misfortune in race three, Tom Moore took over the lead and kept MacDonald on his tail until  the finish flag, a fine win to add to his fifth in race one, leaving him in fifth overall.  Creeping further up the leader board, Lee Wharton missed out on fifth by just one point, but a credible sixth overall was awarded thanks to his fourth and fifth positions.

Determined to make this years VMX Championship title his, Martin Bradbury yet again rode to victory, two wins to his name.  Steve Lyons stayed hot on Bradbury’s heels taking three second places to finish in second overall.  A great battle in race three saw Lyons challenge third overall Chad Sait for the race win, but Sait grabbed the victory and added the win to his two third positions.  Smooth and steady was the order of the day for Alan Scott and three consistent fourth places inevitably left him in fourth overall.  Chopping and changing positions in all three races, Gary Steel got the upper hand over Dave Lopez, two fifth places leaving him in fifth overall ahead of Lopez who added two sixth places to his first race fifth.
