Didn’t He Do “Black”Well?!

Report by Kay Turner

The popular Tonymoto circuit near Winchester welcomed over 150 riders for the seventh round of Portsmouth Motocross Clubs Summer Series.  A torrential downpour the previous day plus continual watering kept the dust away.  Another deluge of rain threatened to leave the final two races complete washouts.

The Senior class was the first group to fight their way to the first corner, with 35 bikes roaring over the first tabletop an awesome sight.  A four-way battle at the front of the pack started right from the off, with Jamie Tempest taking top spot, a slip up in race one denying him a straight set of wins.  Scott Elderfield took over the lead in the first, and pushed Tempest all the way to the finish line, adding a second in the final moto to his win to finish second overall.  Keeping the top two in his sights, Harry Seymour kept on the pace to finish in third, fourth and third to finish third overall.  Josh Scott continued his run of brilliant starts to keep him ahead of the field and rode home to finish in fourth overall, two sixth positions aiding his cause.  Visiting rider Michael Rye saved his best result for last to finish in fourth to come in fifth overall on the day.  Dudley MacDonald’s disastrous second race lost him valuable time on the track, trying to restart the bike, but with his fifth and seventh placings, sixth overall was awarded.

Track supremo Gareth Padgett mastered the whole track with ease in the Inter Open class to take all three wins and the overall victory.  Gordon Appleton led the opening moto to try to spoil Padgett’s run, and stayed in his slipstream to ensure he finished all races in second, and second overall.  Three determined races by Kurt Bond ensured a high placing, a third in race two aiding his cause, third overall was awarded.  Harry Hinson joined the Portsmouth crew to add another inspiring name to their members list, and with a fourth in race two his best result of the day, fourth overall was awarded.  A gallant effort and brilliant result of third in the final moto left Jake Carey in fifth overall ahead of Cameron Mills.  Mills’ impressive third in race one set him up for the remaining motos but a nasty crash in the final race left him struggling to catch up on his rivals.  But never one to give up, he pushed his way through the majority of the field and grabbed sixth overall.

Battle commenced in the Inter 85 class between arch rivals Billy Hare and Fraser Viner, both riders vying for top spot, but Hare kept his cool and retained his lead and won all three races and took overall victory.  Viner challenged for the lead and at times headed the field, ending the day in second overall.  Sniffing at top spot, Oliver McMurray will soon be tasting victory after his performance on Sunday.  Two brilliant thirds and a fourth assured him third overall.  David Roberts rode a steady set of races, an impressive second in race one contributing to his high score to award him fourth overall.  Kieran Gabriele remained in the top six all meeting, and followed Roberts home in the first race to finish third and fourth overall on the day.  A steady set of three races rewarded James Rennie with sixth overall.  Three consistent and hard-fought sixth places highlighted that James is a force to be reckoned with.

Three Junior riders battled for supremacy with Joe Jefferies securing two wins to lead the way but an unfortunate clash with Dylan Hodgkins in the final moto saw his consistent scoring float into the puddles.  Josh Coleman rode smoothly to gradually work his way up the leader board and snatched the final win to finish in second overall.  Leading two out of the three races, Dylan Hodgkins crossed the line in second, third and fourth to settle in third overall.  Harvey Clements took full advantage of the Hodgkins/Jefferies clash and stormed into second place in the final moto, to add to his two fourth places, he ended the day in fourth overall.  A brilliant performance by Oliver Evans who kept his cool and rode consistently well to finish in fifth in all three motos to end up in fifth overall.  Matthew Dowse kept Evans in his sights, and took the technical circuit in his stride to finish in sixth overall, sixth in race one his best result of the day.

A day to remember for Auto rider Harry Wichman who rode the track with ease and secured two wins, but when the heavens opened in the final moto and the track turned into a pond, an unfortunate spill left him in second, but his impressive wins secured him first overall.  Camlann MacDonald kept Wichman in his sights and finished in second effortlessly, passing the stricken rider to finish in first in the final moto.  MacDonald finished in second overall.  Aaron Gordon rode a consistent race in all three motos, two thirds and a fourth awarding him third overall.  Moving further up the leader board, a great day for Charlie Way who finished in fourth overall, a tremendous effort in the harsh conditions in the final moto to finish in third.  Taylor Hammal kept his nerve on the difficult track and an impressive performance was highlighted by his positions, fourth, fourth and fifth to finish in fifth overall.  A steady set of races by Jamie-Lee Burges showed his confidence around the tricky track, especially in the final moto, where the rain made riding conditions difficult.  Three sixth positions awarded him sixth overall.

A full line up of 40 AMX and VMX riders was a breath-taking sight, but a nasty crash in the first moto quickly reduced the numbers.  The unstoppable Zac Blackwell cruised to victory in all three heats, even the torrential rain and mud unable to stop the talented rider take the win.  Harvey MacDonald fought hard to keep on Blackwell’s tailpipe and took second place in all three motos to finish in second overall.  Lee Wharton kept his head to remain high up the leader board and with two fourths and a fifth, third overall was awarded.  An injury left Stuart Seymour in an unfortunate position in race two, but his remaining motos proved what the rider can do and with an outstanding performance on the rain-drenched track, Seymour finished in fourth overall.  Steve Lyons rode it out with the youngsters to finish in fifth overall, battling hard amongst the AMX to keep the VMX flag flying.  Chris Southcott looked set for a top three position, but after a nasty crash just before the finish in the final moto leaving him in a disappointing 24th place, his dominating third and fourth places in the opening motos provided him with enough points to finish in sixth overall.
