“Tempest Triumphs at TonyMoto”

After torrential rain threatened to make Portsmouth’s meeting at TonyMoto another wash-out, the sun finally showed up to dry out the soggy track and the rescheduled ninth round of the Summer series went ahead.  Over 150 riders arrived to the popular Winchester circuit to score some valuable championship points.

Inter Open rider Gareth Padgett reigned supreme on the technical track with two wins to his credit and the overall victory.  But Chris Chapman was hot on Padgett’s heels and after following in behind in the opening motos, he snatched the lead away and took the win in the final race to finish second overall.  A consistent but determined set of races came courtesy of Kurt Bond, finishing third in each moto, and third overall on the day.  Keeping Bond in his sights, Jordan Moyle rode steadily and consistently to finish fourth in all three races to finish in fourth overall.  A battle between a small group of riders followed, both Adam Bravery and Jack Scarlett involved.  Bravery waited patiently to grab his opportunity to sneak into fifth place in the final moto and took the overall placing ahead of Scarlett.  Pushing himself hard to compensate for his disastrous first race, Scarlett battled his way into fifth and sixth to finish in sixth overall.

Three different riders achieved victor status in the Inter 85 class but Lewis Moyle stayed ahead of his rivals to take the overall victory.  Suspected bike problems and a fall denied him a straight set of wins, but two seconds and a last race victory slid him into top spot.  David Roberts took charge of first place in the second moto to award him second overall.  After leading the way to take the win in race one Billy Hare’s day went from bad to worse, after crashing in race two, he found himself wedged in the start-gate with the rest of the pack nearly a lap in front, but a courageous and determined effort pushed him up to fourth in the remaining races to take third overall.  Brilliant starts rewarded James Rennie with two third placings to take fourth overall ahead of an ever-improving Oliver Townsend who saved the best for last, to finish second passed the chequered flag and take fifth overall.  Kieran Gabriele continued his quest for a win, battling to stay in touch with the leaders, and with a fourth, seventh and sixth finished sixth overall.

Two riders dominated the Junior class, with Dylan Hodgkins leading Joshua Coleman around every turn right to the finish flag.  Hodgkins took all three wins to win the group but Coleman kept him within reach to finish in second in each race and second overall.  Sam Baggott battled hard with his rivals to stay in touch with the front-runners and a magnificent third in race two awarded him enough points to take third overall.  An impressive ride was rewarded with an equally impressive fourth overall for Oliver Evans.  His determination to reach the top awarded him with a brilliant third place in the last moto.   Keeping one step ahead of Evans in the opening races, Jamie Carpenter chased down the front runners, keeping his rivals behind him and kept on the pace to take over fifth overall.  An unfortunate spill in race two denied Jamie Cox a higher placing but with two fourth positions, a top six placing was guaranteed.

Another duo of riders kept well ahead of the rest in the Auto class.  David Keet led from start to finish and kept enough distance between himself and second overall Josh Bunter to take the overall victory.  Bunter’s determination to take the lead kept him in close proximity to Keet but settled for three second places.  A close scrap between Camlann MacDonald and Harry Wichman was in place behind the leaders, MacDonald taking the upper hand in the opening motos, but a last race mishap saw Wichman take third place and third overall.  Never one to give up even after a spill on the track, MacDonald took fourth place, this two third places helping his cause to stay ahead of his rivals.  Another great day on the track for Taylor Hammal, finishing in fifth overall, a fourth in the final race his best result of the day.  Charlie Way rode consistently to snatch sixth overall, keeping an extra bit of energy in reserve for the final moto to finish in fifth.

With the first race red-flagged due to Nicky Watts’ disastrous first lap accident leaving him in the back of the ambulance with a broken leg, the AMX and VMX combined class were left chomping at the bit on the start for the re-run.  Completely dominating the opening races, Zac Blackwell led from the off and was soon well ahead of the field to take the first two race wins and the overall victory.  Punching the air with delight after winning the final moto, Harvey MacDonald fought hard to keep the other riders behind him, and two additional second places rewarded his hard work with second overall.  Chris Southcott chopped and changed positions but finished third in race one, fifth and fourth results handed him third overall.  A determined effort from Shaun Kerley saw him keep in touch with his fellow KTM rider, swapping positions with Southcott in the last two races, and with a sixth in race one, fourth overall was awarded.  After a disastrous last round at the track, Ian Tallack was gunning for a top spot and the re-run of the first race saw him stamp his mark on fourth spot, but race two spelled disaster yet again as the bike failed to start on the start straight.  The red mist appeared and he fought his way through to 12th.  On a mission for a good last race, Tallack went head-to-head with Blackwell but pipped him right on the line to take second, leaving him in fifth overall.  An exciting performance, as ever, came courtesy of George Clarke with his unique style rewarding him with sixth overall.  A disastrous 11th in race one spurred him on to better things, and a third in race two added to his sixth in race three kept him well ahead of his fellow competitors.

Another group completely dominated by two riders saw Seniors Jamie Tempest and Scott Elderfield leading the way.  Tempest led the first from the start to take the race win, took the win away from Elderfield in the second, and a second in the final race awarded him the victory.   Second overall Scott did the reverse by following Tempest home in the first, to lead then finish second in the second, then led from start to finish in the final moto to win.  A set of improved race results through the day and some impressive riding rewarded Oliver Rusby with third overall, a fine third in the final race rewarding him with a deserved position.  A return to club level for Daniel Latham saw an impressive performance awarding him fourth overall, two thirds achieved in his opening races.  Brilliant starts for Josh Scott continued to give him the head start over his rivals, and with a magnificent fourth in the final moto, Scott was awarded with fifth overall.  An unfortunate race two left Harry Seymour further down the field than usual, but his fourth and fifth placings in the remaining motos were compensation and sixth overall was an extra birthday treat for the birthday boy!
