Report by Kay Turner

The rescheduled fourth round of Portsmouth MX Clubs Summer Series landed at the popular Cusses Gorse track, near Salisbury on a baking hot Sunday recently.  A brilliantly prepared and generously watered track welcomed over 200 riders with the Junior class starting proceedings.

Harry Sherman made the most of unfortunate Beth Farmers last lap crash and took full honours in the class, winning all three motos.  Josh Coleman closed Sherman down to finish in second overall, sneaking past Farmer to take second in the opening race. Conrad Mewse raced at full speed to catch the leader and two second places left him in third overall.  Another consistent set of races from Tallon Aspden, three fourth places leaving him in fourth overall.  A brilliant result for Harvey Clements who could have placed higher, but missing the track completely just before the finish line lost him valuable places, but a third in race two awarded him fifth overall.  Visitor Billy King’s two fifth places pushed him into sixth overall.

There was no stopping young Auto rider David Keet and he claimed all three wins to take the overall victory.  Hamish Stewart-Ross pushed himself to the limit, taking two second places and second overall.  Josh Bunter’s machine gremlins stayed away for the day and succeeded in taking third overall, pipping Stewart-Ross to the post to take second in race three.  Showing his true potential Aaron Gordons race results highlighted how well he can ride, and a third and two fourths slotted him into fourth overall ahead of visitor Bradley Flagg in fifth.  Harry Wichman had another good days racing, and with a fifth in race two, sixth overall was his.

The dust flew high in the sky as the AMX boys battled their way around the first corner, with Jack Hawes taking the overall victory winning races two and three.  Chris Southcott still on a high from his overall victory at the previous meeting tucked the opening win under his bodybelt, and chased down Hawes in race three to leave him in second to take second overall.  Jamie Hallett rode a hard but steady race to take third overall.  George Clarke’s extra practice the day before paid off and fourth overall was awarded, but should have been higher.  Getting tangled up in a first lap crash left him way down the field in the final race but he carved through the pack to add a 13th to his opening second and third places.  Harvey MacDonald finished in fifth overall, again race three letting him down with the bike not wanting to start, but he was soon chasing down the front half of the field and added a 12th to his fourth and fifth places.  Opposite misfortune for Allen Waring whose opening race was a disaster seeing him finish in 13th, but he soon picked up the pace in race two to finish in second to ensure he finished in the top six.

Newcomer Tony Priestley took the overall win on his first outing with the club, taking all three wins in the VMX Class.  Steve Lyons was hot on Priestleys back tyre and followed him home in all three races to finish in second overall.  With race three full of mishaps, Martin Bradburys opening races thankfully provided him with enough points to secure third overall.  Battling to catch Shaun Brooker, Chad Sait once again fought hard to get to the top, finishing in fourth overall, ahead of Alan Scott who challenged Sait’s positions throughout the day to finish in fifth overall.  An improved performance from Dave Lopez who saved the best for last and finished in sixth to be awarded sixth overall.

Two aggressive but determined race wins in a fast and almost full line up guaranteed Senior rider Tom Speer the overall victory.  Elliot Reeves stayed well ahead of his rivals, and with a second in race one, second overall was awarded on the day.  A great days racing by Ben Anstie paid off and a fourth in race two rewarded him with third overall.  A great performance from Jake Hassell to finish in fourth overall.  Gradually improving his results throughout the day, Hassell stepped up a gear to finish in fifth in the last.  Finding a huge spurt of energy in race three, Dudley MacDonald steered his machine into second position, providing extra vital points to keep him at the top end of the class, fifth overall awarded on the day.  Adjusting to his new class comfortably, Oliver Rusby put on a determined effort to finish high up the field, and a seventh in race two provided him with a top six finish overall.

An exciting set of races was provided by the Inter Open class with Chris Johnson taking the overall win.  Gordon Appleton rode a whole-hearted race, winning the opening moto and continued to chase down Johnson in races two and three, closing in fast to take second overall.  Riding at his best, Daniel Maxey rode magnificently to take third overall, finishing in second, third and fifth throughout the day.  A very determined Kurt Bond flew around the dusty track to catch up on the missed racing time last year, and two fifths and a fourth awarded him fourth overall ahead of Aaron Lopez.  A slow start for Lopez but he soon picked up the pace to finish in fifth overall.  A brilliant result for Jed Hassell who didn’t want big brother to have all the limelight, and two seventh places earned him enough points to stay ahead of his rivals to finish in sixth overall.

The Inter 85 class was a real battle at the front of the field, the unfortunate James Dunn missing out in the overall standings due to a nasty crash.  Josh Turner took over top spot with two wins, but Rob Muscat was so close behind.  Three second places awarded Muscat second overall.  Billy Hare stayed focussed and grabbed third overall, a brilliant third in the final race ending his day on a high.  Visitor Rory O’Connell kept up with the front runners to finish in fourth ahead of unlucky Fraser Viner, whose 13th in race one kept him lower down the order than he should’ve been.  He compensated for the bad luck finishing in fourth in his final two motos to finish in fifth overall.  Steven Robinson steadily improved his positions throughout the day, finishing in sixth in the last to be awarded sixth overall.
