Report by Kay Turner

Winterbourne Gunner – 23rd September 2007

Report by Kay Turner

With 200 riders booked in for the Portsmouth Motocross Clubs meeting at the popular Cusses Gorse circuit at Winterbourne Gunner was going to make for a busy weekend, and the riders who arrived Sunday morning didn’t disappoint the waiting spectators, with rain sweeping in during the final block to make the racing even more interesting.

Winning was made to look a bit too easy for VMX rider Steve Lyons who sped to victory in all three motos, well ahead of the pursuing pack.  A real battle was on for second spot with three different riders determined to take the position away from Chad Sait, but Sait kept on the power to take all three second places and the overall position.  Head-to-head action followed close behind, with Alan Scott snatching third overall away from his rivals, keeping on Sait’s tail but just missing the chance to pass.

A close contest was witnessed between Scott and David Howell in the latter stages of the meeting, both riders crossing the finish line with a centimetre to spare in the second race, Howell just snatching fourth spot.  Race three saw battle commencing again, with the same result again but both riders moving up one place, Howell achieving third on this occasion, with the rider finally finishing in fourth overall.  Positive starts ensured good positions for Dave Lopez who managed to sneak past the Scott and Howell show to finish in third in race two, and putting pressure on the top runners in the remaining motos pushed him into fifth overall.  A good start to the day for Neil Jenkinson saw him steam into fourth position in the opening moto, leaving him in no doubt of a top positions.  He finished in sixth in the second race, but an unfortunate, but highly amusing to his watching family, spill on the corner just past the finish line saw him waste valuable time remounting his Honda, but still maintained his position to finish in seventh, and ended up sixth overall.

A huge turnout in the Senior class saw Jamie Tempest take up his usual position in first overall, narrowly missing out on three straight wins after a slight mishap in the second moto.  Chris Wratten followed in hot pursuit, two second places securing his second overall position.  Consistent but determined racing came courtesy of Elliot Reeves who kept his rivals at bay to finish in third overall, finishing in fourth, third and fourth.

With a top three position being a dead cert for Oliver Rusby, a mis-timed 11th blew his chances of the spot, but thankfully an outstanding performance in his other races, a second in race one and a third in race three secured him fourth overall.  Well accustomed to the track after his outing the previous week, Aaron Bowden got to grips with the technical circuit from the off, and set his sights, but narrowly missed out, on a trop three placing.  Stepping up a gear after race one saw him leave the rest of the field in his wake, and passed the chequered flag in fourth and fifth to finish in fifth overall.  Still on a high following his success at Foxholes a fortnight ago, Dudley MacDonald remained at the head of the field, three top ten positions awarding him valuable championship points, a fifth in race one his best position of the meeting.  Sixth overall was awarded on the day.

One of the biggest group on the day provided the biggest excitement at the front of the pack.  Sam Davis left the rest of the Inter Open class way behind, but a no show in the final moto left him out of the running.  Gordon Appleton took over first position, a brilliant race win in the final moto combined with a second and third highlighted his determination on the track.  Cameron Mills stayed hot on Appleton’s back mudguard and rode steadily throughout the day to take second overall, a third in race three his best result.  Kurt Bond ended the day in third overall, consistent and smooth riding rewarding him with a brilliant fifth in race three.

After a good opening couple of races, chasing down the leader and finishing in second and third, Gareth Padgett had the misfortune to crash heavily on the first corner, but after forcing himself back onto the bike, tailed around to finish to grab some valuable points to put himself into fourth overall.  Jordan Carrier checked out his lines in his opening moto, but stepped up the pace in his remaining races, finishing in seventh in both to finish in fifth overall.  Jordan Moyle took full advantage of the slippery conditions when the rain set in during race three, and added a sixth in the moto to add to his other top ten positions to take sixth overall, just missing out on two higher positions by one point.

The Inter 85 class was once again dominated by Billy Hare who tucked all three wins safely under his crash helmet to take the overall victory in style.  Leading the final moto gave Oliver Townsend extra points to finish high up the leader table, a second, third and fourth awarding him second overall.  Important championship points were added to Darren Wingars tally after a set of three sensible races, a brilliant second in race one the highlight of his day, and third overall was awarded.

With his eye on a podium finish at the end of the season, Michael Denton kept his nerve and finished in a top-class third in race three, and rode a steady race in the first two motos to finish inside the top ten, two seventh positions earning him fourth overall.  David Roberts rode a consistent set of races all day, making no mistakes to finish sixth in all three races to finish in fifth overall.  An outstanding performance came courtesy of Oliver McMurray who pushed himself to the limit in race two, carving his way through the pack to finish in a commendable fourth, and with an eighth and ninth adding to his points tally, sixth overall was his just reward.

The unstoppable Joshua Coleman didn’t put a wheel wrong throughout all motos to achieve a maximum of three wins, and overall victory in the Junior class.  Matthew Dowse kept his sights on the front of the pack, and with a third, fourth and fifth ended up in second overall.  Harvey Clements rode a brilliant second race to finish in second, an unfortunate ninth in race one leaving him lower down the leader table, but with a third in race three adding valuable points to his tally, third overall was his.

Visiting rider Michael Ellis took fourth overall, with a brilliant seond in race three aiding his cause.  An end of season last gasp effort to achieve vital championship points saw Taylor Smith riding at his best, quickly improving his results throughout the day, a fourth in race two a true show of what the youngster can achieve, and fifth overall was awarded on the day.  A gutsy performance from Oliver Evans, with even a crash thrown in for good measure, still persevered and carved through the field to finish inside the top ten.  Third, seventh and tenth positions were ample triumphs to award him sixth overall.

With the rain in block three making the track treacherous, the Autos struggled to find grip around the circuit and bikes dropped like flies.  But David Keet kept his wits about him and notching up two victories, overall victory was guaranteed.  A consistent and stable ride came from Elliot Phillips, finishing in a brilliant third in the final race to finish in second overall.  Harry Wichman made the most of the wet conditions to finish in third overall, crossing the chequers in third, seventh and fifth.

Fourth spot was taken by Aaron Gordon who made a brilliant start by passing the finish line in second, and with conditions worsening through the day, he still maintained high positions to finish inside the top ten.  Tom Hutchison continued his run of good form, making the most of the slippery conditions in the final moto to pass stricken riders to pass the finish flag in fourth to take fifth overall.  A mixed bag of fortune for Hamish Stewart-Ross who rode to victory in race two to compensate for unusually lower positions in the remaining motos, but still secured sixth overall.

The AMX made for some enthralling viewing, with Jack Brunell set for an easy overall victory.  A non appearance by Brunell in the final moto let Harvey MacDonald take over top spot, after gradually improving his results through the day, a win in the final race was the icing on the cake to give him the overall win.  Battling hard with MacDonald in the opening races, chopping and changing positions, second overall was awarded thanks to his second and third positions.  A brilliant start in the final race saw Kurt Freegard vying for top spot, closing down the leader lap after lap, but settled for second overall thanks to his second and fourth positions.

Consistent starts and steady, secure racing bode well for Lee Wharton who remained at the front of the field to keep his rivals behind him.  Finishing in the top six all meeting, he crossed the line in sixth, sixth and fifth to take fourth overall.  Tom Moore placed fifth overall but could have been so much higher had it not been for a first corner crash in the opening moto, but his determined effort pushed him through the field to finish in ninth.  A whole-hearted and intense effort paid off to see him step into a brilliant third place in the final moto to finish in fifth overall.  Muddy conditions an obvious preference for Sam Prowse was highlighted by an outstanding performance in the final moto crossing the finish line in fourth, but he still proved his worth in the opening motos in the drier conditions to finish within the top ten, and was finally awarded sixth overall.
