West
Meon Report
by
Kay Turner
Over
230 riders readily awaited the start of Portsmouth MX Clubs Summer Series
after so much disappointment over previous weeks thanks to the British
weather. West Meon was the venue for the opening round.
With just
under 50 Seniors signed in, a double line up was put in place, and the first
of four races was dominated by Sebastian Osborne after Scott Elderfield led
from the start warning his fellow riders that he’s back! Osborne took three
wins to win overall. Jamie
Tempest in second overall pushed hard to keep just behind Seb to finish in
second in his first two motos, but took the win in race four, with Chris
Wratten battling with Charlie Hughes to claim third overall with two seconds.
Tom Speer steered his KTM to fourth overall, progressively improving through
the three blocks to finish in fifth, fourth and third to edge ahead of Craig
Durston. Durston rode impressively well to finish in fifth overall, a third in
the fourth block his best result. The welcome return of Elliot Reeves who
suffered a severe break at the end of last summer’s season, saw him
gallantly striding into sixth overall. Finishing just one point behind a
higher position, two consistent seventh places made him push his bike to the
limit to finish in fourth in the final race.
A double line up
also took place for the Inter Open class due to the high turnout of
competitors. A close battle and
hard racing between Gordon Appleton and Gareth Padgett saw both riders
claiming two wins each, but Appleton’s last race victory handed him the
overall win on the day. Christopher
Noyce rode at his best and was rewarded with third overall, an impressive
second in race one his best result on the day.
Battling back to full fitness following a recent injury, Jake Carey
showed no sign of slowing his pace, finishing in fourth overall with a
magnificent second in race two highlighting his determination in this tough
group. Chris Chapman fought hard and stayed with the rivals in front
to finish in fifth overall, a third in the final moto showing his true skill
on the bike. Back to his best,
Cameron Mills finished in sixth overall, finishing ahead of many of his rivals
in race one with a brilliant third.
Determined not
to repeat his previous disastrous visits to the track, VMX rider Martin
Bradbury’s gutsy performance paid off to earn him the win, the first two
motos awarded him the victory. Steve
Lyons early exit at the previous meeting spurred him to gain some important
championship points early on and took over the win in race three to finish in
second overall. A scrap was on for third overall between Chad Sait and Richard
Paine who finally gave in and returned to the racetrack.
Paine worked up a sweat to take second in race two which gave him the
edge over Sait, both receiving equal points overall on the day.
Chad chopped and changed positions throughout the day, two third places
awarding him fourth overall ahead of Shaun Brooker who grasped every
opportunity to fight for top spot, finishing in fifth overall, a third in moto
two his highest position. With
all top six riders dashing any other riders hopes of achieving a top six
position, Alan Scott kept his rivals at bay, finishing sixth overall, leaving
the rest of the pack behind.
There was no
stopping young Rob Muscat in the Inter 85 class and three victories secured
him the overall win. Lloyd
Pettett stayed in contention and followed Muscat home in all three races,
being awarded second overall on the day.
Newcomer Jake Fry enjoyed his first two races, finishing in third in
both to be awarded third overall. With
his competitors chomping at the bit behind, Fraser Viner had his work cut out
to achieve top positions but did so in fine style, finishing in fourth overall
with young Billy Hare chasing hard to finish just one step behind in fifth. A last race third proved the Junior Champ has what it takes
in his new class. Unlucky 13th
place in the final moto left Oliver Paine lower down the race positions, but
with two fourth positions in the opening races, sixth overall was reserved for
Paine.
Junior rider
Oliver Osmaston shrugged off his recent injury to take three straight wins in
his class. Close behind, Levi
Coombes took control of second place and stayed there all day and was awarded
second overall. Three riders
stood in contention for the third spot, but Josh Coleman’s consistency and a
brilliant third place in the final moto guaranteed him third overall.
Jordan Bachelor proved a force to be reckoned with in his first outing
as a club member and slotted himself into fourth overall following his fine
third position in the second moto. Visitor Callum Heasman was awarded fifth
overall after finishing third in the first.
Continuing to maintain top positions, Tallon Aspden strived to reach
top spot, and fought well to ensure he ended the day with a high points tally.
Finishing in sixth overall, Aspden achieved a seventh and two sixth
positions.
A great turnout
of Autos prepared themselves for the first of the daunting West Meon hills
with Jamie Cox quickly taking the lead ahead of David Keet.
Both riders gained a victory in the opening motos, but Cox sped to
victory in the last to take the overall win with Keet finishing in second
overall. A fine performance by
Josh Bunter finishing in third in two motos saw him gain third overall ahead
of his chasing rivals. A rider
worth keeping an eye this season, Tom Hutchison closed in on the front runners
to finish in fourth overall, a third in race two an impressive result on the
day. Hamish Stewart-Ross
continued his campaign to reach top spot, finishing in fifth overall, his
fourth in race two helping him add all important championship points.
A great result for Camlann MacDonald who finished in sixth overall,
consistently finishing in sixth position, riding a steady race throughout the
day.
Close to 40 AMX
riders sitting behind the start gate was an awesome sight but no surprise to
see Luke Blanchard still on a high from being crowned AMX Champ in 2006, he
took all three victories to start his championship campaign for the new
season. Two seconds in the last
two motos gave Harvey MacDonald enough points to secure second position ahead
of Sean Barnsdale who returned after injury to secure third overall, finishing
in fourth, third and fourth. New
rider on the block Matt Nash stamped his mark on the group battling hard with
his fellow top riders to finish in fourth overall.
Two fifth places left Chris Southcott in fifth overall after a slow
start to the day. A bright start
for Ian Tallack who finished in third spot, but a couple of spills in the
remaining motos left him lower down the order than usual and finally ended up
in sixth overall.
The
Club is hoping that Inter Open Jack Brown recovers quickly from his accident
at the track, and all riders and their families thoughts are with Jack and his
family at this difficult time.
