MATCHAMS REPORT

Report by Kay Turner

A jam-packed calendar of motocross events over the Bank Holiday weekend could have resulted in a low turnout for the sixth round of Portsmouth Motocross Clubs Summer Series, but the popular Matchams circuit drew in nearly 200 riders from across the South.  The track looked in perfect condition at the start of racing but quickly rutted up to make riding tricky but all riders still put on a great show for the spectators.

The Inter 85s were the first to tackle the sandy circuit with a great battle at the front of the pack between Connor Dennis and Charlie Lambeth.  Dennis took over top spot in the second race to deny Lambeth a straight set of wins and adding two second places took the overall victory.  Lambeth was a clear leader in races one and three, a master of the sand, and took second overall.  David Roberts kept his front mudguard ahead of his rivals in the opening motos, a brilliant second in race two awarding him third overall.

An outstanding effort from Liam Taylor resulted in him taking home fourth overall.  Passing the chequered flag in third in the remaining races awarded him valuable points to stay ahead of his rivals.  Jack Howe rode consistently well to finish in fifth overall ahead of Beth Farmer.  A brilliant return from injury for the talented girl rider who showed the boys just how it’s done.  Blasting around the track with her shoulder finally intact, a fifth and two sixths awarded her sixth overall.

The Veteran class was the next to head toward the first corner, a three way battle commencing at the front.  Two wins secured Paul Williams another overall victory, but he couldn’t keep Alan Scott from grabbing the last race win.  The victory plus two top three placings secured Scott second overall.  Shaun Brooker kept on the gas in all races, battling hard with Williams and Scott, settling for third overall with a third, second and third.

Battling hard to pass Steve Lyons, Shaun Skeates remained near the front of the pack once again throughout the meeting, consistent finishes rewarding him with fourth overall, a fourth in the last his best result on the day.  Visitor Lee Jewell kept in contention with a fourth, fifth and sixth to take fifth overall ahead of Martin Turner.  After a long absence, Turner returned on his YZ250 and pushed himself through the pain barrier to keep within the top ten, consistently finishing in eighth place to finish in sixth overall.

The AMX class was an awesome spectacle on the start line, a near-full line up eagerly awaiting for the gate to drop.  David Goosen tackled the track with ease, winning the final two motos to grab the victory.  Sebastian Osborne won the opening race with style and perfection and followed Goosen home in the remaining races to end up second overall.  Racing at his home track, Brett Wheeler rode a perfect set of races keeping the leaders well within his sights to finish third overall.

A top three position was a dead cert for Wes Hallawell but adding unfortunate spills into his last race didn’t do him any favours, but brilliant starts and a third and a fourth in the opening motos left him in fourth overall.  An uncharacteristic spill in the opening race left Nicky Watts trailing back in 11th, but he redeemed himself to ride superbly in the remaining races, pushing himself to move closer to top spot, a great third in the final moto rewarding his effort with fifth overall.  Jamie Smith accustomed himself to the track during the day and his results improved throughout the motos, ending the day in fifth to take sixth overall.

Undeniably the master of the Matchams circuit, Jake Shipton breezed to victory with three perfectly executed race wins, pure class.  A number of riders were in contention for runner up spot but Oliver Rusby continued to be on fine form snapping up second overall with two second places.  Jono Parker-Davies kept hard on the pace, consistent and impressive finishes throughout the day, he secured third overall.

Ryan Tomkins saved the best for last and added a brilliant third in the final moto to his two sixth places to take fourth overall.  Josh Scott was once again prominent at the front of the pack, always first out of the gate trying to secure his infamous holeshots.  Holding his positions well, and riding assertively, Scotty stepped up the pace in the final moto to move into sixth position to secure fifth overall.  Finishing in sixth overall, Jake Hassell was flying in the last race, mastering the large tabletop with ease, a fifth added to his other top ten positions ensured a top six finish.

A huge turnout of Inter Open riders blasted around the track with three different riders taking the honours in each moto.  Jordan Carrier waited for the final moto to take the win and rode consistently well throughout the meeting to take first overall.  Darren Wingar’s brilliant holeshots guaranteed him top positions and rode to victory in the second to steal second overall.  A brilliant day for Jack Scarlett who took third overall, edging closer to top spot throughout the day, ending the day on a high in third.

Pushing himself to the limit in the closing race, Daniel Maxey kept hard on the gas to finish in second to secure his fourth overall placing.  Thomas Redmore rode well throughout the day, and three top ten finishes, a fourth in the second his best result resulted in him finishing fifth overall.  Ryan Monckton once again had great starts to ensure he would stay at the front of the field, and two sixths assured him sixth overall.

Next out were the Juniors.  Dylan Hodgkins was the clear winner, rapid starts ensuring he stayed at the front of the pack throughout the races, and three wins secured the overall victory.  Freddie Lambeth followed in hot pursuit, riding a perfect set of races to secure three second places and second overall.  Third overall was awarded to Oliver Evans who rode each race with precision, passing the chequered flag in third, fourth and fourth.

Matthew Dowse rode the race of his life and returned to his exceptionally competitive form on the track.  A third in the last awarded him ample points to keep his nose in front of his rivals to finish in fourth overall.    Riding brilliantly, Josh Bunter was on for a top three spot but a nasty and painful spill in the last temporarily halted his race, but a brave effort to push himself back into eighth position added to his fifth and magnificent third in the second rewarded him with fifth overall.  Taylor Hammal fought hard after a disappointing opening moto to cross the finish line in fifth in the closing motos, and secured sixth overall.

After his domination in the Auto Championship, Harry Wichman returned to take over top spot in the Auto class.  Three straight wins were on the cards for the extremely rapid youngster, but an off in race one spoilt his supremacy at the front of the pack.  Two wins though secured the overall victory.  Olivier Cook took over the lead in the opening race, and following Wichman in second in the closing races took second overall.  Still on a high from his victory at Tonymoto, Charlie Cole continued to race well at the front, two thirds awarding him third overall.

Ben Richards rode the track with ease in races two and three, finishing an outstanding fourth in both to finish in fourth overall.  Danny Paige once again remained dominant near the front of the pack.  A continuous, determined effort resulted in two fifths and a sixth to award him fifth overall.  Definitely saving the best for last, Jake Parker completed the top six.  Enjoying the demanding track conditions, he bravely fought through the sand to keep within the top ten in his opening motos, but seriously showed what he is made of in the final moto, and will definitely be one to watch.  A brilliant third rewarded him with sixth overall.
