TONY MOTO REPORT

Win it or bin it!

Report by Kay Turner

Heavy downpours the previous day didn’t deter 170 riders from arriving at an excellently turned out Tonymoto circuit recently for Portsmouth MX Clubs Summer Series fifth round.  Riding conditions were ideal and even the sun made an appearance to make for a perfect days racing.

The Autos were first out, all riders tackling the circuit with ease.  Charlie Cole rode the race of his life and proudly passed the chequered flag in first in the opening race, and with two consistent and confident second places he proudly took over as overall winner on the day.  Even with a nasty crash in race two, Jay Ellis dusted himself off to finish in an excellent second overall.  Pushing hard for the lead in race one, he finished second then added a third in the last, riding a perfect race.  Danny Paige was a force to be reckoned with and with a third in the first and two fourths he finished the day in third overall.

A disastrous opening race left regular winner Olivier Cook stranded at the back of the field, but he redeemed himself in the closing motos to take his usual place at the top, two wins awarding him fourth overall.  Ben Richards remained strong at the front of the field, three top five placings rewarding his efforts with fifth overall ahead of Liam Jones.  A great first race saw Jones battle his way to fifth place and remained high up the field to stay well within the top ten to finish in sixth overall.

Exciting action from start to finish came courtesy of the Inter 85 riders, with Liam Garland riding a perfect set of races to take first overall, three brilliantly executed wins tucked under his crash helmet.  Billy Hare kept hot on Garland’s heels, pushing hard for a win, finishing in third, second and second to take second overall.  David Roberts rode confidently and persevered throughout the meeting to edge his way further up the leader board.  Two third places ensured third overall was his.

Chris Bayliss kept his wits about him throughout the day, keeping his rivals at bay and chased down Roberts in all three motos.  A fifth and two fourths awarded him fourth overall.  An ever-improving performance from Jake Strange placed him fifth overall.  Keeping on the pace in the final moto rewarded him with a fifth, close behind the top four and will be one to watch in the future.  Michael Denton finished the day in sixth overall, an impressive effort from an impressive rider, three top ten positions ensuring a high placing was awarded.

A brilliant battle commenced between Shaun Brooker and Paul Williams in the VMX class.  A straight set of wins was on the cards for Williams, but a crash in the second lost him valuable time.  But with two race wins, the victory was his.  Brooker was in hot pursuit and he stayed head-to-head with Williams throughout the meeting, taking over first place in the second, and with two second places he finished in second overall.  Shaun Skeates rode consistently throughout, keeping the leaders within his sights, finishing third in all three motos to take third overall.

Another two way battle commenced further back, with Neil Jenkinson and Alan Scott vying for fourth position.  Jenkinson took the upper hand with two fourths to award him the position, with Scott taking fifth overall, grabbing a fourth in the second moto to take the battle down to the final race.  Bob Moore kept the battling pair within his sights, ready to take over the higher positions, but two sixths and a seventh awarded him sixth overall.

Awe-inspiring action followed in the AMX class, with three different riders honoured with a race win.  David Goosen was exceptional on the track, and snatching the win in race two he took the overall win.  Jack Brunell’s dominance on the track was outstanding, talent oozing out around the circuit.  After winning the opening moto, he remained at the front of the pack to finish in second overall.  Brilliant starts bode well for Chris Southcott who kept well at the front in all races.  Two fourths and a third ensured he finished in third overall.

Jazz Beach rode a hard race, keeping up with the front runners, staying within the top six, two sixths and a fifth impressive finishes to end up in fourth overall.  Mechanical gremlins denied Sebastian Osborne a top finish, but his third in race one and a dominating win in the last ensured a top six placing, ending the day in fifth overall.  Aaron Lovelock had to battle hard from the back of the pack in the final moto, but his two sevenths and an 11th still placed him in sixth overall.

Over 30 Senior riders lined-up next for some more bar-bashing action.  An impressive performance by Oliver Rusby saw him take home the overall win, two wins a true reward for his hard work on the track.  Jackson Evans started the day well taking the first race win, and remained in contention for top spot in the remaining races.  Two seconds plus his win ensured he finished in second overall.  Visitor Ryan Tomkins was a late entry and gladly snatched away third overall, finishing third in all races.

Mastering the track with ease, Gareth Padgett slotted into fourth overall even with a surprisingly slow start in the opening moto, but edged himself into fifth and fourth in the last two races.  Jono Parker-Davies remained near the front runners, closing them down even further in the second to finish in fourth.  A sixth and 11th added high points to move him into fifth overall.  Without punctures interrupting proceedings, Josh Scott proved he has got what it takes to ride at the top of his game.  Brilliant starts and only just missing out on his trademark holeshots, he remained at the front of the field, racing hard in second in the opening moto, finally finishing in fourth.  A disastrous crash on the first corner in the second left him battered and bruised and trailing in 28th place, but persistent, domineering riding pushed him through the field to finish in 14th.  Battling hard with Chris Bick throughout the final moto saw him narrowly miss out on fifth, and he crossed the line in sixth to take sixth overall.

A near-full line up of Inter Open riders kicked up the dust but Mathew Bayliss was a clear winner.  With a prominent lead, he finished all three motos in first to finish first overall.  Daniel Maxey rode an impressive set of races, narrowly losing second place in the last, but two opening second places awarded him second overall.  Brilliant starts by Ryan Monckton ensured a high overall placing, staying at the front of the pack in all three motos.  Two thirds and a fourth awarded him third overall.

A great sight to see was Lewis Moyle finishing all three motos, injury-free.  Consistent top six finishes bode well for the talented youngster, but saving the best for last he worked his way into second place, an impressive result.  Moyle finished the day in fourth overall ahead of Jordan Carrier.  Pushing himself to the limit throughout the day should have resulted in a higher placing for him, but after remaining in second for the majority of the last race, disaster struck but he kept his head and finished in sixth.  Added to his two fourths in the opening motos he finished in fifth overall.  Riding well throughout the day until a crash left him with a sore head, Oliver Paine closes the top six.  Impressive riding saw him push himself into fifth in the closing motos to finish in sixth overall.

The Juniors were last to the start line, and Josh Coleman took over his usual placing of first overall, leading from start to finish and took away three easy wins.  Jorja Johnson battled hard and her hard work paid off by finishing in second overall, crossing the line in second, second and third.  Taylor Smith had a great day on the track, a third in race two his highest result of the day, staying consistent and riding a confident set of races to finish in third overall.

Not wanting to sound biased, but Ryan Turner had an absolutely brilliant day on the track!  His opening race saw him staying well at the front in third place until the last lap but still remained in fifth.  A disastrous start in the second left him fighting hard to carve his way through the field to finish in ninth.  But definitely saving his best performance for last, he again found himself in third chasing down Jorja Johnson until lap three saw him make a smooth pass to slot into second place, his highest ever position and punching the air with delight he ended the day in fourth overall. (Well done, Son!!!)  Henry Siddiqui battled hard, well within the top six, and two consistent fourth placings plus a seventh awarded him high points to finish in fifth overall.  Top three was on the cards for Lewis Dowdeswell, but a horrendous crash with Josh Bunter at the finish line left him having to drag himself back through the field.  But a brilliant third in the opening moto awarded him enough points to remain in sixth overall.
