Winterbourne Gunner – 27th July 2008

PMXC Round 11 Summer Series

A blistering hot summer’s day welcomed nearly 180 riders to the popular Winterbourne Gunner circuit in Salisbury for the eleventh round of Portsmouth Motocross Clubs Summer Series.  The track crew had worked hard the previous night to drench and grade the circuit in preparation for the days racing, and extra water first thing in the morning kept the dust at bay for the majority of the day.

The Inter Open class were first to the line and Lloyd Pettett was the runaway leader from the off, three straight wins awarding him the overall victory.  A close battle commenced for runner up spot, Jordan Carrier narrowly edging his way into second place with three consistent and well-earned third places.  Lewis Moyle was eager to snatch the higher placing but a sixth in the final moto after two great second places edged him into third overall.

George Clarke battled his way further up the field throughout the day, saving his best effort for last, passing the chequered flag in second place after effortlessly passing his rivals to grab the runner up spot, and finished in fourth overall.  Jack Scarlett fought hard to grab a higher placing, brilliant starts aiding his cause and he stayed at the front of field to chase the front runners down.  Two fourths and a sixth awarded him fifth overall.  Jamie Strange had an outstanding day on the track, starting off the day with a brilliant fifth to ensure a high placing was his, and constant, determined riding secured him sixth overall.

The Auto riders were next out and tackled the entire circuit with style and ease.  Olivier Cook found the track a breeze and secured all three race wins to once again reign supreme in the class.  Liam Jones kept his wits about him and rode a set of perfectly executed races to finish in second overall, passing the chequered flag in second, third and third.  Brandon Hickman could have easily secured second but with his chain hanging off in race one he had to rely on his two second places to grab third overall.

Fourth overall was awarded to Jay Ellis who rode a confident set of races keeping the leading riders well within his sights, a brilliant third in the first pushing him on to secure three top six placings.  Ben Richards rode consistently well, staying in fifth place throughout the meeting to finish fifth overall.  Charlie Sturgess followed Richards home in every race, just missing out on a higher position, but three sixth places still secured him sixth overall.

Brilliant and exciting racing came courtesy of the Inter 85 riders, with Liam Garland missing out on top spot thanks to a DNF in the first race.  Liam Knight took over the race win and with two further third places took home the overall victory.  Cory Southwood stayed close to the front, two second places securing him second overall.  Oliver McMurray rode positively at the front of the pack, three top five placings ensuring he finished third overall.

Disappointment showing all over his face, Max Acres missed out on a top three position courtesy of bikes problems in the final moto.  Acres was flying high in the opening races, a brilliant runner up placing in the second race but disaster hit in the final race which saw him drop further down the pack.  His other two results still secured him fourth overall.  Dillon Baynton battled hard with the riders within the top six and stayed well inside the top ten to finish in fifth overall, passing the chequered flag in sixth, seventh and fifth.  David Roberts opening race secured him a high placing, a brilliant fifth adding valuable points to his tally, and with two additional top ten finishes he secured sixth overall.

A great show of talent was put on by the Junior riders, with Callum Heasman grabbing the overall victory away from Josh Coleman.  Two seconds and a second race win provided him with top spot.  Coleman still bravely grabbed second spot, a clear winner had it not been for a puncture in the second moto and had to settle for 10th place added to his two wins to take second overall.  Daniel Knight rode a brilliant set of races, keeping well in contention of the front runners, and with a second, fourth and fifth secured third overall.  Josh Bunter finished in fourth overall, battling hard within the top six and a brilliant third in the second race ensured he scored high points to stay well in contention of a high placing.  Oliver Evans worked hard every lap to move further up the field and an outstanding fourth in the second race secured him fifth overall ahead of Taylor Hammal.  Hammal constantly strived to sneak past Evans in each race, gaining advantage in the opening moto to finish sixth but settled in behind him to finish in fifth and seventh in the remaining races to finish sixth overall.

With only a couple of spare spaces on the start gate, the AMX class was an awesome sight as they roared up the start straight and kicked up plenty of dust to provide some thrilling action around the track.  With plenty of spills added into the equation riders were dropping like flies, and but Mark Young kept his cool in the searing heat to lead the pack to grab two race wins and the overall victory.  Danny Iles stayed well in contention of top spot and rode a determined set of races to secure second overall, a second in the first his best result on the day.  Snatching the second race win, Jamie Tempest kept Young within his sights in the final moto to finish second and secured third overall.

Lee “Rat” Foyle pushed himself to the limit in all three motos, excelling in the whoops section to cross the finish line in fourth, fifth and fourth to finish fourth overall.  Luke Heaver remained consistent throughout the day, finishing sixth in all motos to snatch fifth overall away from Nathan Jacobs.  Jacobs enjoyed his day on the track and another consistent set of races, crossing the finish line in seventh in all motos, secured him sixth overall.

A last minute decision to ride was a wise choice for Shaun Brooker as he took home the overall victory after leading the pack and secured two race wins.  Paul Williams managed to sneak past Brooker in the closing race to grab the win away to compensate for a disappointing second race which saw him crash and lose valuable places, but still finished second overall.  Shaun Skeates was flying high throughout the day, a brilliant second in the second race to finish third overall.

Andy Biles edged closer to the front of the field throughout the day, improving his race results with each race, finishing in sixth, fourth and third to finish in fourth overall.  Alan Scott battled hard with Neil Jenkinson throughout the day, grabbing the higher placing in the last after battling throughout the race and secured fifth overall.  Neil Jenkinson fought hard to stay within the top six, only missing out once throughout the meeting in race one, but secured a fifth and a sixth in the remaining races to grab sixth overall.

Last to go were the Seniors and an awe-inspiring show of talent throughout the field wowed the crowds, with Chris Wratten leading from start to finish in all three motos to secure the overall victory.  Jake Hassell was once again showing pure talent around the track, staying well in contention of a race win, finishing second in all three motos to finish second overall.  Even with a couple of hitches throughout the meeting, Jono Parker-Davies rode his heart out grabbing back the places lost to finish in third overall after passing the chequered flag in third in all races.

Pushing from the front as always, Josh Scott nudged himself closer to top spot, and just narrowly missed out on third place.  Closing in on Parker-Davies he crossed the finish line in fifth, fourth and fourth to secure fourth overall ahead of Gareth Padgett.   Padgett worked hard to carve his way through the field to confidently finish within the top six and two sixths and a fifth ensured fifth overall was his.  Jordan Moyle made an impressive return to club level racing, staying well ahead of the remainder of the field to finish in seventh, sixth and seventh to grab sixth overall away from his rivals.
