Matchams Report – 21st November 2004

Report by: Sarah Garland

Despite two days of heavy rain, the Matchams circuit rode almost perfectly.  It was noticeable how much work had been done in preparation for the forthcoming Matchams series.  All riders made good use of the track for the following weekend, travelling from all over the country, providing Portsmouth with some excellent races.

The AMX and Veterans ran together so there was great racing throughout the field.  Richard Leat took the overall despite a small blip in the second race.  Although still not fully race fit, he showed no signs of this and as usual wowed the crowds, clearing the huge start straight tabletop.  Brett Wheeler took second with excellent riding and consistent scoring.  John Ford finished third.  He looked on good form taking a first in the second race.   Visitor Carl Luke finished in fourth, with Sam Simmons finishing in fifth despite his 18th place in the last race.  James Barney finished in sixth after having had a bad first race.

The Seniors provided some exciting racing. Kristian Whatley looked fantastic on his home track and took first spot, but had an awful last race and had to battle hard to gain a 3rd place.  Joe Dark secured his second place with a first place in the last race. Sean Barnsdale gained third with holeshots in all three motos.  Max Tranah finished fourth will a well-fought 4th position in the last.  Ryan Seabright and Sam Sunderland finished fifth and sixth respectively.

The Inter Open group followed with a quality field.  Joshua Waterman never failed to impress and took first overall with two race wins.  Lewis Tombs showed some superb riding for second overall, with Sebastian Osborne finishing in third.  Ross Hill after gaining 2nd in race two finished the day in fourth.  Warren Fields and Lewis Abbott finished fifth and sixth after having a great second race.

In the Inter 85 class, top spot with three race wins went to Jackson Evans with some outstanding riding.  Jack Plowman finished in second with three 2nd places.  Jake Shipton looked very comfortable on the 85 in third overall. Joe Crocker finished fourth after a small mistake in the last race.  Daniel Maxey rode brilliantly to finish fifth overall with Oliver Rusby finishing in sixth following a good last race.

The Autos were great to watch with ever changing leaders.  First place went to Rick Muscat with two race wins.  Returning from injury, Max Acres took a tumble in the second race but still finished second overall.  Joshua Broadway finished third despite a bad first race.  Harvey Clements, Jamie Buckingham and Rowan Miller completed the top 6, all gaining good points during the day.

The Juniors were last out and struggled through the last race in fast fading light on this grey day.  Luke Newman took first place with some smooth riding.  James Dunn was consistent in his results and took second overall.  Lloyd Pettett finished third overall with two 4ths and a 5th.  Connor Walkley after having a terrible last race still managed to grab fourth overall.  Despite crashing in all three races, Liam Garland snatched fifth overall from Joshua Turner who finished in sixth.
