MUD, OWSLEBURY  MUD!!

Report by Kay Turner

An extra hour in bed was what was needed for the riders who arrived at a damp and dreary Owslebury on Sunday, for the opening round of Portsmouth MX Clubs Winter Series.  The added hour of sleep gave all those who attended much needed energy as their spirit and vivacity was soon drained due to the downpour and extremely muddy conditions.  But the 100 riders who turned out braved the storm and gave an impressive show of audacious riding.

Due to lack of riders and the threat of fading light toward the end of the day, the small and big wheeled 85 riders were combined and were first out of the gate.  An excellent display of indomitable riding for Inter 85 rider Billy Hare, who took two out of three wins to take the overall victory.  Inter Open Cameron Mills charged hard trying to take a win, holeshotting race three, and finishing close behind Hare with two seconds to take second overall.  David Bowen thrived in the muddy conditions and raced ahead of his competitors to take third overall, a third in the second his highest result of the day.

The more mud the merrier it seemed for Jordan Carrier, who rode without a hitch in the final moto to grab third, pushing up his points tally to finish in fourth overall.  Returning from injury proved no problem at all for Andrew Hutchison, who kept himself high up the leader table, two fifths and a sixth an impressive set of results, rewarding him with fifth overall.  In his first meeting in the bigger wheeled 85 class, Kieran Gabriele made an extraordinary start to his Winter series, a fourth in the worsening conditions in race two a commendable performance, resulting in Kieran being awarded sixth overall.

In his first meeting since upgrading, David Keet continued his run of wins, adding two more to his Auto tally to take the overall victory, a straight set of wins just evading him.  With dad heartily waving the chequered flag in delight, Oliver Evans rode to and outstanding victory in the opening moto and with a second in race two, second overall was awarded.  As conditions worsened through the day, Tom Gathercole’s positions improved, a gutsy performance awarding him a fourth and two thirds to take third overall.

Like a Brazilian on a football pitch, Owen Hillmans passes on the track were smooth and ingenious and rewarded him with some superb results, a third in the first and an admirable second in the final moto awarding him fourth overall.  Another rider in his first meeting in the Junior class, Camlann MacDonald displayed pure talent around the track, keeping his nerve, finishing high up the leaderboard to take fifth overall.  After a vigilant start to the day, Jack Cooper saved the best for last and finishing in a worthy fourth place in race three, ended the day on a high in sixth overall.

An unenviable task for the young Auto’s to attempt the treacherous, slippery track, but Taylor Hammal took it all in his stride, and made winning look easy.  Three wins later and the overall victory was duly awarded.  A plucky performance from Jay Ellis saw him reach his highest position of the year, finishing in a magnificent second overall, with two second places to his credit.  Charlie Sturgess battled hard to complete as many laps as possible, and his hard work earned him third overall, a third in the last race a commendable feat.

A gallant and brave effort from Liam Jones rewarded him with fourth overall, a determined push over the line keeping his name in the top six, two sixths and a fifth his reward.  An unfortunate DNF in race one didn’t deter Ben Richards on trying his hardest in the appalling conditions, and a third and outstanding second in the remaining motos guaranteed fifth overall.  Visitor Charlie Cole only managed to compete in two motos but still scored enough points to finish sixth overall.

Young and old combined in the adult classes, rapid riders and mountains of mud made for some extremely challenging lapscoring.  After Luke Blanchard’s early exit in race one due to yet more mechanical gremlins, Chris Southcott took charge of first place, winning the opening moto, and dominated the top three in the remaining races.  Two impressive third positions were enough to award Tom Moore second overall, a god-send as bike problems in the third left him trailing in seventh place.  Kurt Freegard rode strongly in all motos, staying consistent and progressed from fifth to fourth in the final moto to take third overall.

Jason Skinner narrowly missed out on a top three place, but achieved fourth to finish the highest VMX rider.  Deciding retirement from the sport wasn’t on the agenda, Jason returned to the club to take charge of the veteran class, doing so in style, and three determined races gave him his just-reward.  Jason Cooke flourished in the muddy conditions, finishing way above his competitors, two sixth positions rewarding him with fifth overall ahead of Sean Stickland.  An unfortunate bit of bad luck in the final moto left Sean lower down than he deserved, but competitive racing in the opening motos left him in sixth overall.

As the weather worsened, numbers started to deteriorate, but the Seniors still put on a brave show of gutsy riding.  Borrowed machinery a preferred option for Oliver Rusby, and two wins safely tucked under his wet-weather gear made him the overall victor.  Dudley MacDonald rode a great set of races, chasing Rusby to the line, and with a third and two seconds finished in a gallant second overall.  After a great opening win, Daniel Latham stayed in contention to finish high up the leader-board, an unfortunate glitch in the final moto denying him a higher position, but he still managed to finish third, thanks to his win.

A great day for Adam Triggs who battled hard all day, and with a last gasp push in the final race to finish in third, Triggs took fourth overall.  In his first outing in the challenging Senior class, Charlie Haylock quickly found his feet in the perilous conditions, and added a sixth and fourth to his opening ninth, and ended the day in fifth overall.  Another upgraded rider, Jordan Moyle fought valiantly in the slick and sloppy conditions, keeping his wits about him, and rode safely to consistently finish in all motos, a fifth in his final race a great accomplishment.  Sixth overall was awarded to Moyle.
