SWANMORE REPORT
Report by Kay Turner
130 riders
arrived at Swanmore recently to take part in Portsmouth Motocross Clubs Winter
series, and round three saw all riders raring to burn off those extra
Christmas calories. A glorious
sunny, but cold day resulted in a brilliant day of racing, and started off the
New Year on a high.
With the introduction of the new adult open class, the VMX class put on
a show of different bikes, speeds and styles, with Alan Scott and Shaun
Brooker both vying for the win, and some nail-biting, head-to-head racing was
witnessed. Scott took the overall
with two wins. Not to be outdone,
and after stalling his 450 in race one which lost him his lead, Brooker took
the win in race two to take second overall. Shaun
Skeates remained consistent, just far enough behind the battling front two to
stay out of trouble, and with two third places, took third overall.
After a long absence, Martin Turner returned to prove he still has what
it takes, and with a flying start finishing in third in the first moto, Turner
secured fourth overall. Jamie
Winbourne battled hard to catch Turner, and succeeded in the final race,
snatching a fourth, his highest position of the day, and took fifth overall.
A gallant effort from Andy Watts who was still suffering from broken
ribs, rode bravely into sixth overall with three consistent sixth places.
A great turnout of Senior riders provided some excellent entertainment,
with Chris Wratten taking the honours of the overall win.
A change of tyre after the opening race gave Wratten better grip on the
slippery track, and ended the day with a win.
A true master in the mud, Chris Bick relished in the sloppy stuff in
race won, pulling out an amazing lead over the rest of the field to take the
win. His remaining high scores
awarded him second overall on the day. Jackson
Evans blasted around the drying track, his brilliant performance awarding him
with a win in the second, and a second in the last to finish third overall.
Another great performance from Oliver Rusby who rode a set of solid
races, keeping his nose in front of his rivals, and finishing third in two
races, kept hold of fourth overall. Elliot
Reeves battled with Rusby in the opening motos, staying in touch with his back
wheel, finally securing his place in fifth spot.
With a rocket up his exhaust pipe, Jacob Myers flew into an incredible
fifth place in race one, keeping his points tally high, and with another two
top ten positions under his kidney belt, Myers finished in sixth overall.
With only a handful of Inter 85 riders, the riders joined forces with
the Inter Open group to fill the start line.
The top three riders kept their positions throughout the day, with Rob
Muscat a clear winner in all three races, even having time to look back to see
where his opposition was. Gareth
Padgett rode hard to catch Muscat, and three consistent and well-ridden second
places awarded him second overall. Injury-free
at last, Daniel Maxey returned to the track and rode impressively well to
finish in third, taking third overall.
Adjusting to the frozen conditions in race one, Jordan Carrier soon
sped up the leader board as the track thawed.
Two brilliant fourth places awarded him fourth overall.
Darren Wingar rode a steady, consistent and impressive set of races,
passing the chequered flag in fifth in all motos to finish in fifth overall.
Harry Hinson with constant support on the sidelines powered into sixth
overall, two sixth positions rewarding him with vital points to keep his name
high up the leader board.
Michael Denton took maximum points in the Inter 85 class after leading
his fellow riders in the mixed group. A
magnificent, fighting effort by Daniel Lawler who ended the day in second
overall in his class. After such
disappointment in race one, Lawler was unperturbed and fought hard to finish
in second in his remaining races. Harvey
Huckstepp rode a great set of races, two third places a brilliant result, and
enough to award him third overall in his group.
The super-quick Juniors were next on the line, with Joshua Coleman
leading the pack from start to finish, three perfectly executed wins awarding
him the overall victory. Billy
King sped up the race order throughout the day, a fourth, third and second
awarding him second overall. Bradley
Rowe kept the leaders in his sights, a third in his final moto ensuring he
finished in third overall.
Tom Gathercole blasted around the course in his opening motos, a third
and fourth ensuring a top three placing was his.
But a nasty tumble down the hill left him having to fight his way back
through the field, remarkably still finishing just outside the top ten from
last. Fourth overall was
eventually awarded to Gathercole. Matthew
Dowse’s positions improved throughout the day as the track dried out, and
ending the day on a high, finishing in fourth place, fifth overall was
awarded. A great effort by Oliver
Evans who finished the meeting in sixth overall.
An outstanding, whole-hearted effort in the final moto rewarded him
with fifth place.
A handful of Autos braved the cold to venture out onto the muddy track,
but conditions failed to slow down Olivier Cook who stormed ahead of the pack,
securing all three wins to be overall victor on the day.
Connor Ford rode a set of smooth and steady races, passing the
chequered flag in second to take second overall.
William Easey fought hard to pass Ford but settled in third in all
motos to take third overall.
A battle pursued for the next two places, with Liam Jones and Ben
Richards battling it out for supremacy. Jones
took fourth overall, two fourths and a fifth ahead of Richards.
Race three saw both boys chopping and changing positions throughout the
race, until the final corner of the final lap saw both fall off at the same
spot, with Richards managing to cross the line first to take over sixth spot.
Jay Ellis continued to improve in his class, moving further up the
leader board. Taking full
advantage of the Jones/Richards fiasco in race three, he snatched fifth place
helping him finish in sixth overall.
Last out were the AMX Open boys, the class seeing three different
winners throughout the day. Exhilarating
action from start to finish, Lee Foyle grabbing the last race win away from
Scott Robinson to take the overall victory.
Unable to grab a win for himself, but staying right in the thick of the
action at the front, Nick Leer scored two second places to take second spot.
Race one winner Darren Banwell rode another impressive set of races,
keeping his eye on top spot, but settled for third overall.
Chris Southcott battled hard at the front of the pack, staying with the
front runners, with his best result coming in race two, finishing third,
slotting him into fourth overall, level on points with Banwell.
With a dominating win in race two, Scott Robinsons high scoring secured
a top six placing. Passing the
chequered flag in second in the final moto gave him enough points to finish in
fifth overall. After finishing
Senior Club Champion in 2007, Jamie Tempest remained a force to be reckoned
with in the AMX class, three results in the top ten in the competitive class
proving his capability on the bike. After
storming into third in his final race, Tempest finally settled in sixth
overall.
