TONY MOTO REPORT

Third Time Lucky!

Report by Kay Turner

After twice having to cancel the second round of their Winter Series, Portsmouth Motocross Club finally succeeded in holding the meeting at Tonymoto on a freezing cold Sunday recently. Thermals, woolly hats and gloves were certainly needed as temperatures hovered around freezing, but 120 riders were still brave enough to tackle the frozen track.

The Juniors took charge of the day, leading the way around the technical track, with Joe Jefferies taking control of the first two motos at breathtaking speed to take the overall win.  Punching the air with delight, Josh Coleman snatched the last race win to add to his second and third places to finish in second overall.  Dylan Hodgkins rode a dominating set of races, finishes in the top three awarding him third overall.  After a poor start to the day, Patrick O’Neill redeemed himself to fight back to fourth overall, a brilliant second in the last pushing up his points tally.  Oliver Evans was another rider who had a slow start to the meeting, but two impressive fifth places in the closing motos ensured he finished in fifth overall.  David Keet continued his good run in only his second meeting as a Junior, and worked hard all day to stay within the top ten, finishing fifth, sixth and seventh to end the day in sixth overall.

A handful of Auto riders desperate to race took to the start line, with Olivier Cook leading the way well ahead of the remaining riders in all three motos to finish in top spot.  Harry Kimber kept Cook in his sights, and with two seconds finished second overall.  Finishing in third overall, Brandon Hickman kept hot on Kimber’s back wheel, racing hard to take over a higher position, and did so in fine style in race three, finishing second.  Ben Richards continued to improve his results, and upped his pace in the final moto, a third place helping him finish in fourth overall.  Two impressive fifth places awarded Jay Ellis fifth overall, working hard to keep out of the mud around the track, with Liam Jones riding a consistent set of races, pushing himself hard in the closing race to finish in fifth, to finish sixth overall.

With over thirty adults revving up a deafening noise on the start line, the AMX and VMX riders roared to the first corner, with Luke Blanchard taking complete control, leading from start to finish.  Even pulling away last in the final race, he still ploughed through the field to take the lead and finished the overall winner.  Chris Southcott led race three until the final stages, but still secured second place, and along with his other two dominating performances, Southcott finished in second overall.  Sean Lock appeared to be the fastest rider on the track, taking corners with ease and tremendous speed.  Three top five finishes left him in third overall.  Aaron Bowden battled hard with Sean Lock in all races, banging bars around the corners to try to keep the upper hand over Lock.  Two fifths and a fourth awarded him fourth overall.  Adjusting to the muddy and cold conditions, Shaun Kerley preserved his energy for the last race, finishing in third to push him into fifth overall, ahead of Jamie McCarthy.  McCarthy stayed consistent throughout the day, two sixths and a seventh awarding him sixth overall.

The Senior class was completely dominated by Daniel Latham who took all three wins in style, to finish overall victor.  Oliver Rusby put up a strong fight to snatch away Latham’s lead, riding a commanding set of races, finishing second in all three to take second overall.  After leading the opening race, Chris Wratten stayed at the front of the pack, and two thirds helped him finish in third overall.  Another impressive performance came courtesy of Elliot Reeves who remained at the top of the class, two fourths providing vital points to push him into fourth overall.  George Formes finished in fifth overall, crossing the line in seventh, sixth and sixth to finish just ahead of Jackson Evans.  Evans had brilliant starts, leading race two to show he can ride with the best, but was unable to keep the lead.  A third in race one was his best result of the day and he finally ended the day in sixth overall.

Track superemo Gareth Padgett continued his domination of the Inter Open class, taking all three wins to finish the overall winner on the day.  Zac Allsop kept the leader within in his sights, being awarded top three places throughout the day to keep his hands on second overall.  A tremendous start for Jordan Carrier who tucked an impressive second under his crash helmet in the opening moto, a great result which helped award him third overall on the day.  In his first meeting in the Inter Open class, Darren Wingar made an awe-inspiring start to his bigger-wheeled campaign.  A fifth in race one was impressive enough, but leading the second race was the icing on the cake!  He ended the race in second and proudly finished the day in fourth overall.  David Bowen battled hard at the front with the leaders, consistent finishes awarded him fifth overall, a third in race three a perfect way to end the day.  Maintaining consistent scores, and riding a perfect set of races, Jack Scarlett kept on good form to finish in sixth overall, two sixths and a seventh his results on the day.

Liam Garland returned to his old club to take over where he left off, finishing the day in first overall after securing three impressive wins.  There were no signs of Max Acres recent shoulder injury as he comfortably rode into second overall, passing the chequered flag in second, third and third, in his first meeting in the Inter 85 class.  Jake Fry chased down Acres in all three motos, finishing close behind to take third overall.  Fourth overall was awarded to Harvey Huckstepp who found his form in the treacherous conditions, finishing brilliantly in the opening moto in fifth.  Scott Wigley kept Huckstepp within his sights to finish in fifth overall, two sixths and a seventh his reward for his hard effort on the track.  A great top six position for Daniel Lawler, finishing sixth overall.  Keeping a close rein on those in front, Lawler rode steadily and finished consistently, passing the chequered flag in seventh, seventh and eighth.
