A freezing, foggy day welcomed nearly 240 riders to Portsmouth Motocross Clubs opening winter round, all those attending eager to try out the recently revamped circuit.  Unseasonal dry spells of weather meant dust was inevitable and caused a few problems throughout the day, and with the track having to be changed halfway through due to a few nasty accidents, the racing was reduced to two blocks, but the action was spectacular and enthralled the watching crowds.

Taylor Hammal took control of the small wheeled 85 class, leading from start to finish, and snapped up both race wins and the overall victory.  Henry Siddiqui wasn’t too far behind and rode a sensible couple of races to stay safely seated and secured two seconds to finish up second overall.  Like Siddiqui, Harry Wichman was still on a high from a great finish at Weston Beach Race and powered into third spot, two consistent rides rewarding him with two third places.

With some new additions added into the group due to riders upgrading, the Juniors took centre stage with Xavier Cook storming straight into the lead to secure the first race win.  Leading race two he succumbed to Cain Marsh’s pressure and slipped into second place but still bagged the overall victory.  Marsh was charging through the field, and came from nowhere in race two to appear at the front of the pack, a brilliant win securing him second overall.  George Stock appeared disappointed with his second race result but an outstanding second place in race one rewarded him with third overall.

A great turnout of Auto riders sped around the reduced track catching out the lapscorers with their speed, and it was two-way battle for the lead between Toby Potter and Luke Williamson.  Both riders shared the spoils, each bagging a win each and a second place, with only an inch between them as they crossed the line.  Both riders were awarded joint first overall.  There was a similar battle for third overall, with Rickylee Roche and Josh Jones going head-to-head, both riders scoring a third and fourth to finish up joint third overall.

A jam-packed gate of VMX and EVO riders battled it out to reach the first corner in pole position, with Paul Webb getting stuck into the thick of it amongst the top ten VMX riders.  He secured the overall in the EVO class with two firsts.  Kev Randall and Alex Cook kept each other company further back and both scoring the same results were awarded joint second overall.

Paul Spacagna denied anyone a look in on first place, as he powered his way to two straight wins and took home the overall.  Paul Canon hunted Spags down, and easily grabbed two second places to secure second overall.  An impressive set of moves on his rivals rewarded Shaun Hayles with third place in the opening moto, and worked hard to secure a fifth in race two to secure third overall, sharing his position with Shaun Brooker who took over third place in race two to score highly.

Another packed group of AMX Novice riders roared up the dusty start straight, with Jordan Talmage taking charge of the class, having a hard job keeping Perry Skeates from snatching his position, but remained in first in both motos to take home the win.  Skeates’ bike sounded like it had a wind problem in the second moto, but still got him home safely in second place in both races to finish in the runner up spot.  Matt Smith kept hard on the gas, keeping the leaders within his sights, working his way into third after his fourth in race one, scoring highly to secure third overall.

The AMX was geared up to be the most exciting race of the day but after an horrendous incident in race one, the field was reduced but still provided some exciting racing.  A welcome sight to see Tommy Wright return and was the outright winner on the day after winning the opening moto when it re-started.  Zac Blackwell was on fire and disappointed that the first race result didn’t stand as he was miles ahead of the pack.  The restart saw him stall but still worked his way back to third, and redeemed his mistake in race two to easily win my miles to secure second overall.  Gareth Padgett made the jumps look easy as he whipped his way into third overall, closing Wright down in the second race to finish in third.

The Senior races were spectacular too, another unfortunate accident halting the day but when the race was re-run Liam Knight powered into second place to chase down Jordan Carrier, and with Carrier out of the running in the second moto, Knight led the race from start to finish in brilliant style to bag the overall victory.  Jordan King was flying around the circuit, not easing off the throttle once, and chase Knight home in race two to secure second, and finished the day in second overall.  A brilliant day for Dan Lawler who stormed his way into third place in race one after a great start and held his position for the remainder of the race.  Race two saw him work his way through the field to move into sixth place to end his day in third overall.

After a long wait, the patient Inter Open class roared into action, with Josh Coleman victorious after securing the lead from the off and bagged two firsts to secure the overall victory.  George Fountain was on a rampage trying to catch Coleman, and rode brilliantly to secure two second places and second overall on the day.  A three-way battle for third place ensued the leading duo, with Cam MacDonald, Tallon Aspden and Jamie Cox all vying for the last top three spot.  But with a great start and powerful riding, MacDonald grabbed third spot, finishing his day with a fourth and a third to nab third overall.
